Bio

Dr. Ting, Professor of Counseling, is active internationally in scholarly work, consultation, and training in China. He was a visiting professor of Chinese University of Hong Kong, Beijing Normal University (School of Psychology) and others in China. Envisioning to bridge career theory and practice in the West and the East, he has published a website: Careersbridge.org, which provides online career assessment and resources for people in China. Also, he is a nationally recognized scholar in student success, international student and services, and Asian American mental health and counseling in higher education. He is the recipient of several professional awards including Fellow of NASPA, American Counseling Association (ACA)’s Ralph Berdie Memorial Research Award, and National Association for College Admission Counseling’s Scholar Award. Recently, he also received the Innovation/Creativity Award (2020) from North Carolina Counseling Association and the Jackson Rigney International Service Award 2019, College of Education, NCSU. Over the years, as principal investigator, he has received over one million dollar funding for his research/projects. He served as associate editor and on editorial board in a number of journals including, The Career Development Quarterly, Journal of College Counseling, Asian Journal of Counseling, and Journal of College Student Development. Currently, he serves on the editorial board of Counselor Education and Supervision, and Journal of International Journal for the Advancement of Counselling He is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor, Global Certified Career Development Facilitator Instructor (GCDFI), and Journey to Intimacy Facilitator (JTIF).

Research Description

  1. College Admission and Student Success: Issues including multicultural backgrounds, interests, and challenges; ExCEL, a small group approach enhancing academic performance and student success.
  2. Career Development and STEM Education: Application of career theories in Chinese culture, career education for STEM among students of color, and career decision-making
  3. Online Teaching and Learning: teaching and learning strategies and effectiveness
  4. Mental Health Issues: depression among aphasia patients, couple and family issues, student athlete problems, etc.
