Carl Young

Bio

Carl A. Young, a former middle grades and high school English teacher, is associate professor of English education in the Department of Teacher Education and Learning Sciences at North Carolina State University. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. At NC State, he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in English methods, teaching composition, content area reading and writing, and new literacies and emerging technologies. He conducts research on new literacies, social media, eportfolios, and other technology applications in English education, as well as reading strategies. In addition, Dr. Young serves as the MSL Program Coordinator and the Literacy & English Language Arts Education Doctoral PAS Leader. He is the former editor for the English language arts section of Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education, a member of the New Literacies Collaborative, and a co-founder of the New Literacies Teacher Leader Institute, an innovative professional development initiative for teachers. Selected publications have appeared in English Education, English Journal, Journal of Literacy Research, and Learning & Leading with Technology. Dr. Young is the co-editor of Research on Technology in English Education.

Research Description

Dr. Young’s research currently focuses on new literacies and related theories and practices that are motivated by emerging digital technologies (e.g., the status of technology integration in English education; the flipped ELA classroom; social media as a tool for enhancing ELA content knowledge; digital video as narrative text; and project-based inquiry & teacher education). Past research interests have included: the effects of professional development on middle school students’ and teachers’ application of literacy strategies; middle and high school students’ and teachers’ perceptions of effective writing response strategies; teaching English in rural and inner-city schools; making the transition from preservice to inservice English teacher; responding effectively to student writing; and integrating critical literacy, technology, and inquiry-based applications into the English language arts classroom.
