PD 572 – METRC: African-American Read-In — First Thirty Thursdays

February 11, 2021 | 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 12:00 pm on Thursday, repeating until February 25, 2021

Each year the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) sponsors a National African American Read-In encouraging “communities to read together, centering African American books and authors…to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month.” Join METRC on Thursdays in February to hear 30 minutes of reading from Black Authors or Illustrators of picture books. We will ask you to do some sketchnoting during the reading and reflect after the reading – you will also have an opportunity to share books significant to you by Black authors/illustrators.

In the sessions, we will be reading the first chapters of middle grade/YA books and/or picture books to get you hooked and ready to read more. Look forward to more “First Thirty Thursdays” this semester on different themes. If you are interested in trying something similar in your classroom, check out the African American Read-In toolkit from NCTE and “First Chapter Fridays” which launched our “First Thirty Thursday” idea. https://ncte.org/get-involved/african-american-read-in-toolkit/ and https://languageartsclassroom.com/2019/02/what-is-first-chapter-friday.html
