Brothers United in Leadership Development

Purpose:
The Brothers United in Leadership Development (B.U.I.L.D.) Summit, presented by the North Carolina State University College of Education, is an annual event designed to expose 9th -11th grade high school male students, in particular male students of color, to the diverse role of leaders in a growing global society. Through the summit, participants will learn leadership skills, the variety of academic disciplines in the education field, develop skills to enhance their career and college readiness, and have the opportunity to form connections with other participants. Participants will also have the opportunity to interact with college student leaders, university faculty, community leaders, and K-12 teachers and administrators, as well as increase their knowledge about the post-secondary education environment.

Event Details:
This year’s theme for the annual B.U.I.L.D. Summit is, “Building Community”. The event will take place on Saturday, April 14, 2018 within the North Carolina State University College of Education (Poe Hall). Registration will be held from 8:30 a.m.-9:00 a.m. and the event will conclude at 3:30 p.m. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided to all participants and the event is free of cost. Participants are responsible for transportation to and from the event. Participants attending in groups of 10 or more are encouraged to be accompanied by a chaperoned group, school, or community organization. All participants must submit a registration form and be notified of their registration status prior to attending the event.

Registration Instructions:
For students interested in attending the event, please complete both the online registration form and the parent/guardian signature form found at the links below. Please return the parent/guardian signature form to the mailing address, fax number, or e-mail address found at the bottom of the signature form by March 26, 2018.

Available Spaces:
There are 100 spaces available for participants to attend the event which are offered on a first-come, first-serve basis. The forms will be reviewed in the order in which they are received. Participants will be notified via e-mail of their registration status and given further event details during this time (i.e. event itinerary, campus map, detailed directions, etc.). Participants must be notified of their registration status prior to attending the April 14th event.

Event Details:
B.U.I.L.D. will take place on Saturday, April 14, 2018, within the North Carolina State University College of Education (Poe Hall). Registration will be held from in the Poe Hall South Atrium from 8:30 a.m.- 9:00 a.m. and the event will conclude at 3:30 p.m.

Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided to all participants and the event is free of cost. Participants are responsible for transportation to and from the event.

Attire: The attire for the B.U.I.L.D. Summit is casual (e.g. jeans, sneakers). A t-shirt will be given to all high school participants during on-site check-in the day of the summit.

General Event Agenda:

  • 8:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.: Registration sign-in & continental breakfast- Poe Hall South Atrium
  • 9:00 a.m.: Welcome- Poe room 216
    • Purpose of the B.U.I.L.D. Summit
    • Introduction of keynote speaker
  • 9:15 a.m.: Keynote Speaker
  • 9:30 a.m.: Instructions & Raffle Drawing
  • 9:35 a.m.: Meet with College Student Leader & Small Group
  • 10:00 a.m. – 12:10 p.m.: Rotating Breakout Sessions – 2nd floor classrooms, Poe Hall & Park Shops
  • 12:15 p.m.: Lunch & free time with groups- Poe Hall South Atrium
  • 12:30 p.m.: Continued lunch and “Courageous Conversations” discussion- Poe 216
  • Raffle Drawing
  • 1:20 p.m.: Break
  • 1:30 p.m.:  College Student Panel/ Student Performances
  • 2:30 p.m.: Meet with college student leaders for final debrief
  • 3:00 p.m.: Wrap up and Evaluation

Directions to North Carolina State University’s Poe Hall

Poe Hall

Address of Poe Hall: 2310 Stinson Dr, Raleigh, NC 27695

From Crabtree Valley and areas North (Wake Forest Rd, Six Forks Rd, and Capital Blvd)– Take I-440 (Outer Beltline) to the Hillsborough St Exit; make a left onto Hillsborough St. (toward downtown); continue on Hillsborough St (pass Meredith College – left, Applebee’s – right, BP gas station – right, Zaxby’s – right. Zaxby’s is right before the start of NC State’s campus.) Once you reach NC State University’s campus area (the sidewalks will change to brick on the right side of the street), go 1-1/2 miles or more until you pass the “Bell Tower” (gray stone with clock on right); make a right at the stoplight onto Pullen Road; you will reach a traffic circle. In the circle, make a right onto Stinson Drive. You will see the information booth, and Poe Hall is straight ahead after the booth. Poe Hall is a cream colored building that is seven stories tall on the right (there is a red & white sign out front with its name).

From Downtown– Take Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive west. Martin Luther King Drive turns into Western Boulevard. Make a right onto Pullen Road (NCSU exit); go through the stoplight and go across the bridge (railroad below); you will reach a traffic circle. You will need to make a left onto Stinson Drive (Second Street after crossing bridge). In order to make the left, you must go around the traffic circle. You will see the information booth and gates, and Poe Hall is straight ahead after the booth and gates. Poe Hall is a cream colored building that is seven stories tall on the right (there is a red & white sign out front with its name).

From Cary and West Raleigh– Take I-440 to the Western Blvd exit (Downtown – NCSU and Shaw). Follow Western Blvd to Pullen Road (You will go through the Gorman Street, Dan Allen Drive, and Avent Ferry Road intersections), make a left onto Pullen Road. Go across two bridges (railroad below); make a left onto Stinson Drive(second street after crossing bridge). In order to make the left, you must go around the traffic circle. You will see the information booth and gates, and Poe Hall is straight ahead after the booth and gates. Poe Hall is a cream colored building that is seven stories tall on the right (there is a red & white sign out front with its name).

From areas east, southeast, and south of Raleigh (Garner, SE Raleigh, and Knightdale)– Take I-40 West to the Gorman Street exit, make a right onto Avent Ferry Road (Hardee’s is at the intersection). Follow Avent Ferry Rd until you reach the intersection of Western Blvd, and make a right onto Western Blvd. Then, make a left onto Pullen Road. Go across two bridges (first bridge crosses over Western Blvd westbound and second bridge crosses over railroad tracks below); make a left onto Stinson Drive (second street after crossing 2nd bridge). In order to make the left, you must go around the traffic circle. You will see the information booth and gates, and Poe Hall is straight ahead after the booth and gates. Poe Hall is a cream colored building that is seven stories tall on the right (there is a red & white sign out front with its name).

PARKING INFORMATION:
Please park in the SAS parking lot. Once you pass through the information booth and gates located on Stinson Drive, make the first left turn and the SAS lot is located directly on your right. A student will be standing at the steps leaving the SAS lot to help direct you towards Poe Hall.
