Why did you choose to study abroad?
I chose to study abroad because going into the education field I knew that my options to study overseas later were not impossible, but it would be difficult. I knew that coming into college I wanted to have an experience that would set me up for leaving home, family, and friends. I knew this would help me create relationships before coming to campus.
What did you learn about yourself?
Studying abroad in Prague taught me how adaptable I am in new and unfamiliar environments, as I navigated a foreign culture and language. I discovered a greater sense of independence and confidence, especially in handling everyday challenges on my own. Immersing myself in Prague’s rich history and diverse perspectives broadened my worldview, deepening my understanding of different cultures. Most importantly, I learned that stepping outside my comfort zone leads to personal growth and lifelong memories.
What was one of your favorite parts of your program?
One of my favorite parts of studying abroad was learning a new culture and enjoying the new food. Trying to pick up on Czech was probably one of the most interesting experiences I had. Watching myself and others WANT to learn the language so that we could communicate when there, was so amazing.
What advice do you have to future study abroad students?
My advice for future study abroad students is to embrace the experience with an open mind and be ready to step outside your comfort zone. Learn some basic phrases in the local language—it’ll help you connect with people and navigate daily life. Be open to meeting new people and trying new things, as that’s where some of the best memories come from. Lastly, don’t stress too much about challenges; they’re part of the growth and make the experience even more rewarding.
How did your study abroad experience prepare you for your future career?
My study abroad experience in Prague enhanced my adaptability and problem-solving skills, crucial for managing diverse classroom environments in elementary education. Immersing myself in a different culture taught me the value of cultural sensitivity, which I can apply when working with students from various backgrounds. It also strengthened my communication skills, helping me explain concepts clearly to those unfamiliar with them, much like teaching young learners. Overall, the experience instilled patience and creativity, qualities essential for fostering a supportive and dynamic classroom. Taking a Leadership class while abroad also prepared me for working in a classroom and learning crucial skills when it comes to working with colleagues.
Were you surprised by anything during your time abroad?
Something that surprised me while studying abroad was when I had to take some form of public transportation everywhere. Coming from the US where you can drive at 16 or take Ubers everywhere. It was almost a culture shock have to learn how to take the trams, read the maps, and even walking places.
How were your classes abroad different than if you would have taken them at NC State? Did you take any field trips or do anything outside of the traditional classroom?
Classes in Prague were more immersive and hands-on compared to NC State, as many lessons were tied to the city’s rich history and culture, offering real-world context. Unlike traditional classes at NC State, I had the opportunity to take field trips to historic sites, museums, castles, and cultural landmarks, which made learning more experiential. Outside the classroom, we went to Český Krumlov to explore the city and do team building while white water rafting.
Would you do it again?
I would definitely study abroad in Prague again because the city’s amazing history and beautiful buildings were so inspiring and fun to explore. The cultural experiences and getting to know locals really opened my eyes to different ways of life. I also made some awesome friends with other students, and the memories we created together mean a lot to me. Overall, the personal growth and unique adventures I had there would make me want to go back in a heartbeat.
