NC State Technology Portfolios

The goal of this site is to provide N.C. State students with guidelines for creating a technology portfolio. This portfolio is a requirement for initial licensure in the state of North Carolina. It is up to each department to evaluate these portfolios. Therefore this site will only provide general guidelines. Contact your department about specific requirements as well as any rubric that may be used to evaluate your portfolio. Beginning in the fall of 2003, candidates for licensure must demonstrate competency in the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers. See the NC State Teacher Education site for more information: http://ced.ncsu.edu/teachered/technology.html

A complete portfolio will have at least 27 entries. This number was calculated from the total of subcategories. An artifact may be used for more than one entry, however, each subcategory must have an evidence and a reflection.

This site will provide you with:

  • A sample portfolio. This sample is in web form. with html and pdf pages. You may choose to create your technology portfolio as a web site and publish it in your www4 locker space.. However, keep in mind that shortly after you graduate, your account at N.C. State will be terminated. Therefore, once the portfolio is complete, you need to do one of the following: find another server with space for your site, print out a hard copy of each page in your site, or create a CD with the site on it. You are not required to create your portfolio electronically. You may choose from the beginning to keep your portfolio in a three ring binder. No matter which format you choose, make sure it is neatly organized and easy to navigate.

Another site you will find helpful is the Online Technology Tutorials site. Each technology standard and subcategory is listed, with either Web resource links to use for creating artifacts or tutorials to help you gain competence.

Artifacts

In your technology portfolio, you must include artifacts for standards 1-6 that address each Standard's subcategories (ex: I A and B, II A-E, etc.) You may include more than one artifact per sub-category. However keep in mind that this is a portfolio. A folio is a collection of all of your work. A portfolio is simply a collection of your best work. The whole point of the portfolio is to show ways that you have incorporated these competencies into your teaching.

Evidence of the Artifact

It is not enough to simply include the artifact in your portfolio. You also need to include some kind of evidence that the artifact was used. For example, if your artifact was a lesson plan you could include a video or photo of the lesson being taught, or if there was an assignment from the lesson, you could include a sample of the student's work. Journal entries and assessments are also great evidences of the artifact.

Reflections

Finally, you also need to include a reflection on the experience or artifact. If you already keep a journal, then the journal entries would suffice as the reflection. A reflection might include why you designed or used the artifact, what happened when you taught, and your plans for using it in the future.
