DAY
DAY (“Determined Area Youth”) seeks to promote youth advocacy, by way of a select group of at-risk youth in both middle and high school, through leadership, student involvement, and service learning. Our goals include fostering self-advocacy skills within this targeted group, with a key focus on the development of self-esteem, teamwork, personal motivation and goal-setting, citizenship, safety and wellness, and applied life skills. DAY’s central mission is to empower these youth to find their own “voice,” so that they can thrive in spite of societal demands. NC State DAY students work weekly (one to two hours per week) with these younger students at two local school sites, at which one-on-one mentoring sessions have included skill-building activities designed to improve the self-advocacy acumen of the students served. Individual mentoring sessions vary, but at different points include experiential learning, classroom resources, needs assessment, and intense discussion.
lift
Leadership Institute for Future Teachers (LIFT) is a one-week residential program for rising high school seniors who have demonstrated leadership potential and an interest in pursuing teaching as a career. The overall goal of LIFT is to respond to the critical need for teachers of color in North Carolina. Participants spend the week in leadership development training, web-design workshops, seminars led by current educators, and leisure activities.
Quotes from students who have participated in the program:
"I did not even consider being a teacher before I came here but this program quickly turned it around. I now even plan to go to NC State. Teaching I believe is now my calling."
"I have always wanted to teach, and now the desire is stronger. I have learned so much more about the career and I can't wait to start."
"LIFT really impacted my life for the better. It gave me lasting impressions and new ways of thinking. You are really blessed with the power of change because I know I can speak on behalf of all “lifters.” You have helped us all." (Justin Crawford, Ashbrook High School, Gastonia, NC)
MSEN
The Mathematics and Science Education Network (MSEN) Pre-College Program seeks to preprare underserved students in the middle and high school grades (6-12) for careers in education and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The program partners with school districts to recruit students from underserved populations who have not been prepared to pursue college prep level math and science-based courses. The program has had remarkable success resulting in over 99% of the students proceeding to a four-year college or university over the past four years. Approximately 70% of the students have decided to pursue a career in education or STEM.
