LATERAL ENTRY
Lateral entry is an "alternate" route to teaching for qualified individuals outside of the public education system. Lateral entry allows qualified individuals to obtain a teaching position and begin teaching right away, while obtaining a license as they teach. The NC Dept of Public Instruction authorizes lateral entry licenses on a provisional basis in licensure areas that correspond to the individual's academic study.
At NCSU, there are two lateral entry pathways: Traditional Lateral Entry, and NC TEACH.
Traditional Lateral Entry (LE)
Traditional LE programs can differ greatly depending on your content area. The time it takes you to complete an LE program will depend upon your background in the content area and how many courses you are willing to take during each semester. However, all coursework and licensure requirements MUST be completed by the end of your third year of teaching.
Typical traditional LE programs consist of:
-
Content-Area Coursework (specific to each person based on a transcript evaluation)
-
Education Coursework (22-30 hours)
-
Practicum instead of Student Teaching (1-3 hours)
-
PRAXIS II
Advantage over other programs:
You can enter the classroom right away and take licensure classes at a slower pace (compared to NC TEACH). This option is good if you feel like you cannot juggle teaching and taking two courses per semester, which is required of NC TEACH. Also, if you have taken education courses previously, you may be able to count these towards your licensure requirements.
Available Licensure Fields:
7-12: Technology Education*, Agriculture and Extension Education**, Business and Marketing Education(online)***
*For Technology Education, please complete a Draft Licensure Plan to be submitted along with your application: http://ced.ncsu.edu/mste/Latentrypage.htm (see link at bottom of Technology webpage).
**To get program information and an application for Agriculture and Extension Education, please see the LEAP website.
