Associate Dean, Dr. Gerald Ponder appointed Special Advisor to the North Carolina State Board of Education's Twenty-First Century Professionals

3.9.2008

Dr. Gerald Ponder, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Education at NC State has been appointed a Special Advisor to the Twenty-First Century Professionals, a sub-committee of the State Board of Education (SBE).

The Twenty-First Century Professionals has primary responsibility for licensure, personnel evaluation, special award, and professional development issues for teachers, administrators, and other school personnel for the North Carolina Public Schools.

"This appointment is both an honor and an opportunity," said Ponder. "This is the first time that higher education has had any representation on the State Board. We can provide a higher education perspective that has been absent from policy discussions. We also can educate SBE members about the roles that the universities play in licensure and professional development efforts in the state and advocate for additional resources for preservice teachers and their education."

Gerald Dillashaw, Dean of the School of Education at Elon University, will serve along with Ponder as representatives of higher education institutions in North Carolina. They join four other Advisors to the SBE on matters of equity, impact, and process for initiatives and issues.
