honor educational leader
Raleigh, NC , October 22, 2009 North Carolina State University’s College of Education will honor Dr. Chris Dede in the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation annual Friday Medal Presentation on Wednesday, Nov. 11.
Dede is the Timothy E. Wirth Professor in Learning Technologies at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education. His research spans emerging technologies for learning, infusing technology into large-scale educational improvement initiatives, policy formulation and analysis, and leadership in educational innovation. Dede is exploring gaming technologies to engage students, promote learning and facilitate assessment with grants from the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education Institute of Education Sciences.
“Dede’s international reputation as a leader in the field of educational technologies makes him an ideal recipient,” says College of Education Interim Dean Dr. Jose Picart. “His career focus and expertise are consistent with the Friday Institute’s mission to promote innovative education.”
The Friday Medal is awarded annually to a leader with significant, distinguished and enduring contributions in education who embodies the mission and spirit of the William & Ida Friday Institute for Educational Innovation. Past recipients include Former Gov. Jim Hunt; Bette Manchester, Director of the Maine Learning Technology Initiative; Dr. Don Leu, the Neag Endowed Chair in Literacy and Technology at the University of Connecticut; and Dr. Ken Branch, founding principal of Centennial Campus Middle School.
Attending the event: Dr. Jim Woodward, Chancellor of NC State; William Friday, President Emeritus, University of North Carolina; the Hon. Burley Mitchell, former Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court; Wendell Murphy, former congressman of North Carolina; Myra Best, special advisor to the Governor on education and educational innovation; Ann Goodnight, director of community relations, SAS; and Frances D. Graham, Associate Vice Chancellor, North Carolina Central University and American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow.
