Doctoral Program in Technology Education
A highly individualized program of study leads to the Doctor of Education Degree in Technology Education. The Plan of Graduate Work, which is designed by each student inconjunction with an advisory committee, builds those leadership qualities demanded by the profession. Once the Plan of Graduate Work is approved, it becomes a contract between the student and graduate faculty. When admitted, students must continue their enrollment each semester until completion of the degree. A minimum of 90 semester hours (less credit hours from master's degree) beyond the bachelor's is required. The doctoral degree culminates with a dissertation.
Areas of Concentration
The doctoral degree in Technology Education at NC State University provides four areas of emphasis in developing competent professional leaders. These include building strong majors in techology education, securing an understanding of leadership and change, developing significant research capabilities, and gaining supportive knowledge and skill from an appropriate minor.
Admission to the Doctoral Program
Since test scores and grade point averages are not perfect measures of student abilities, a comprehensive evaluation form is used to determine eligibility. Items considered on the evaluation form are:
• Grade point average (must have at least a 3.3 GPA) on previous graduate work
• Appropriate test scores (within the past five years) from either the Graduate Record Exam or Miller Analogies Test
• High ratings from the three reference letters
• An outline of career goals
• Applicant's appropriateness of education and experience for the program.
Technology Education faculty members will review the materials, make recommendation on admission, and note if they would be willing to chair applicant's advisory committee. Once the reviews are completed by the faculty they meet to determine admission or to hold an interview with the applicant before a final decision is made on admission.
