Mrs. Patton joined the faculty of the Mathematics, Science and Technology Education Department in 2005.  She earned a Master of Education Degree and an Education Specialist in Mathematics Education Degree at the University of Georgia.  In 1998, she earned two Bachelor of Science Degrees at NC State University: one in Secondary Mathematics Education and one in Middle Grades Mathematics and Science Education. There she is also a Teaching Fellow alumna. Prior to that, Mrs. Patton taught mathematics at Cary High School in Cary, NC and at Lufkin Road Middle School in Apex, NC.

While at the University of Georgia, Mrs. Patton worked as a graduate assistant on two mathematics education projects.  The first project, InterMath (http://intermath.coe.uga.edu/), which was funded by the National Science Foundation, was a professional development effort designed to support teachers in becoming better mathematics educators.  It focused on building teachers' mathematical content knowledge through mathematical investigations that are supported by technology.  (Mrs. Patton worked on this project under Dr. Jim Wilson, a 2001 NCTM Lifetime Achievement Award Winner.)  The second project, Explore Math, which was funded by an Eisenhower Grant, was geared toward improving primary teachers’ confidence and abilities in teaching mathematics from a standards-based approach.

Mrs. Patton is interested in using problem-solving and metacognition to improve mathematics teachers’ self-efficacy in the teaching of standards-based mathematics.  She is also interested in the teaching of mathematics through the use of technology and technology-enhanced mathematics investigations (TEMIs).

Mrs. Patton’s duties in the Mathematics, Science and Technology Education Department include teaching EMS 203, Introduction to Teaching Mathematics; and EMS 480, Teaching Mathematics with Technology; advising undergraduate students and supervising student teachers.
