Thinking of making the Web part of your class? Posting a course syllabus, creating a course locker for students to turn in assignments and class chat rooms are just a few of the many ways in which the Web can be used. Creating the Web page is only part of the process. This website will assist you in understanding some of the pieces of the puzzle.

E-Reserves

Upon request and in accordance with applicable policies and guidelines, the Libraries provide both print and electronic access to certain course materials such as class notes, exams, homework assignments, journal articles, and book excerpts.

WolfWare

WolfWare is a collection of tools, interfaces, and standards that are designed to make managing and maintenance of course lockers easier for both instructors and system administrators. The instructor designs and creates the Web materials for their course lecture section.

WebCT Vista

WebCT Vista is a Web authoring system which allows the instructor to choose the tools to be used on the website (message board, chat room, class notes etc.) from a point and click environment. If you need immediate assistance, call the NCSU Helpdesk at 515-HELP.

AntiVirus
Software

It is important that computers be protected from viruses, and never has it been easier to protect every computer you own. Thanks to NC State's agreement with Symantec, Norton Antivirus is now free to any member of the NC State community. If you do not already have antivirus installed on your machine(s), we strongly encourage you, both faculty and students, to please take the time and do so now, so that we can protect the campus computing environment.

Classroom/Lab
Reservation

Reservation requests should be made through the Unity Lab Reservation web form at the same time a course is being scheduled through your department scheduling officer. Doing so will provide sufficient time to identify and resolve any conflicts that may arise (i.e., time, software and hardware incompatibilities, etc.).

Class Folders

Faculty who are teaching a class in Poe Hall can use space on Poe's Unicorn server to set up a class folder. This folder can be used as a dropbox in which students can turn in and receive their assignments. To apply for a class folder, go to:

http://ced.ncsu.edu/ops/labs/classfolder.html

To access an existing class folder from a Mac, go to:

To access an existing class folder from a UnityNT workstation, go to:

Listserv

Listservs allow a user to send email to a group of people at once rather than on an individual basis. These are useful if you would like the class to have discussions and exchange questions online. The following links will provide you with information ranging from the uses of a listserv, to setting up and managing the list. Hint: you may want to make a text file of your students' emails and names to help speed up the process of subscribing them to the list.

inFORM

inForm is an application for faculty and/or researchers to increase the interactivity of their Web pages through the use of Web-based forms. Information submitted via these forms can then be emailed to you or saved to AFS file space that you designate. Thanks to inFORM, the perl code that operates in the background is already in place for you which means you do not need any to have any programming knowledge. Web forms created with Dreamweaver can be easily set up to work with inFORM.

Web Design

Prior to actually creating the website, some thought should be given as to the objective of the site. Do you simply wish to convey information or will the students be actively involved with the site? The following link gives some information about instructional design.

Accessible and
ADA-Compliant Web Design

All Web pages representing NC State must comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Accessible web design is universal web design, so it is important as you are developing web content to consider who will be accessing your information and how they will be accessing it. Much of NC State's information and services are now available on-line. For this reason, it is increasingly important that the information and services be presented in ways that makes them accessible to everyone, including persons with disabilities. Designing accessible web pages is neither difficult nor costly, particularly when accessible design is considered up front, rather than after the page is already complete.

Locker Space

A locker is a Unity/Eos directory or file space. To post pages on the Web, pages must reside on the NC State Unity server. The locker space provides the page with an address or URL. The first link takes you to the application form for locker space and also gives you policy information. The second link takes you to a page that will automatically set up your locker space. The third link provides you with information that will be helpful concerning lockers.

ITD Information about NC State Web pages

When creating a page, the page must be created in such a way that it can be read by the browser. In our College, some common tools for making Web pages are: HTML coding with a text editor, Netscape Composer, Dreamweaver, and Mozilla. Follow the link below for a basic guide on creating your own Web pages .

http://www.ncsu.edu/it/essentials/web_pages/

FTP

Once you have created your web pages, you must upload them to your locker space. To complete this task, you will need to use some type of FTP program which will transfer your work to the locker space. Cyberduck (Mac OS) and WinSCP (Windows) are two commonly used FTP programs. The first link allows you to download WinSCP. The following links provide tutorials to WinSCP and Cyberduck, respectively.

Access Rights

Once you have created your website and uploaded your pages, you will need to grant access rights so that people can view your site. The following site will explain this process and take you through the necessary steps.

Web Conferencing

Web conferencing systems allow users to have online group discussions that use the World.Wide Web as the interface. Participants can read, post, and reply to messages in a particular topic group. The messages remain online as long as you like. Students can use the forum from any computer that has Web access and do not need email. Forums allow asynchronous discussion.

Internet Relay
Chat

Another option that allows students to discuss course information is through the use of chat rooms. IRC (Internet Relay Chat) provides a way of communicating in real time with people from all over the world.
