Listening to Podcasts using iTunes

Jump to Creating Podcasts

  • Log into Nomad with a browser such as Safari or Internet Explorer.
  • Open iTunes. There should be an icon on your dock or open the program from your applications folder.
  • Open the music store by clicking on music store button on the left side of the window.
  • Once the music store opens click on the link to browse and/or search through available podcasts. If you would like to narrow your search you can select a Genre from the drop down menu first.
  • There are several ways to find podcasts: searching and browsing. In order to search, simply type keywords to identify author, topic, title, etc. into this box and press return:

It is possible to narrow the search by using the drop down menu prior to typing in your search terms. A resulting list will appear. Click on any of the podcast titles to listen.
  • Browsing allows you to narrow your search incrementally. You may wish to browse instead of search if you would prefer to broswe through available titles as opposed to attempting to specify keyterms. Often this is helpful because key terms you use to perform your search will not match exactly the key terms used in the titles or descriptions. To browse, click on the browse link:
  • A new screen appears that allows you to select a category of podcasts and further narrow by subcategory. Once you choose a subcategory, a list of available podcasts will appear below. To listen to any of the podcasts, simply click on the title.
  • Note that iTunes has navigation buttons similar to a browser, forward one page, back one page, home, or category index:
  • Some podcasts in iTunes will let you subscribe to them. If you subscribe to a podcast, each time you open iTunes it will check for a new issue of that podcast. If there is a new issue, it will download the podcast to your computer. Note that if you subscribe it does download the podcast so if disk space is an issue for you, you may not wish to use this feature.

Creating Podcasts with GarageBand

  • Assuming you already have voice audio recorded on your iPod, plug in your iPod to your computer. Next, you will need to get your voice memo into your iTunes Library. When you plug in your iPod to your computer, iTunes should automatically open and detect your new voice memo. iTunes will ask if you wish to import the voice memo into iTunes. Click No. Note that you can skip down to the step working directly with GarageBand if your audio is already on your computer.
  • On the desktop, double click on your iPod's icon to view the contents in a new window.
  • Double click on the Recordings folder to open it. One of the files within that folder is your voice memo. Drag that file into your iTunes Library folder within the iTunes application window.
  • Select the file in the Library folder by clicking on it and then from the Advanced menu, select Convert Selection to ACC. In some versions of iTunes, it will say Convert Selection to MP3. Delete the original or rename it so you don't confuse the two.
  • Open GarageBand. If the Grand Piano opens with the program, close it.
  • From the Track menu, choose New Track. In the dialog window that opens, select "Real Instrument," "Basic Track," and "No Effects." Then click "Create."
  • From iTunes Library, click and drag the audio track you into the new track you just created in GarageBand.
  • Create surrounding audio music to play in the background or create transitions to / from various parts of your recorded. The list below provides a nice variety of transition or background music. Hold down the control key and click on the link to download the file.
  • Once you have completed editing your file, go to the File menu and select "export to iTunes" and it will get imported into your Library.
  • You have created your first Podcast!
  • Follow these directions to put your Podcast on the Wolfcast server for public download.
