A Note on Video Conferencing Etiquette

Here, I would like to make some quick reflections and observations about etiquette with regards to video conferencing.

Many etiquette problems will be solved prior to the conference, provided that both parties have communicated thoroughly and clearly their intentions.

Even though you are not physically present while in a video conference, it is important to remember that while you are watching the other class, they are also watching you! And, unless you are mindful about the use of the mute function, they will also be listening to you. Though it may seem that you are miles away, which you literally and physically might be, you must remember that while in a video conference you are a virtual guest in each other's classrooms. If you are at any time confused about this, pretend that you are physically sitting and visiting in the same class that you are in a conference with. Would you act/speak/respond/behave in the same way?

Finally, be mindful of the medium through which you are interacting. Due to the nature of internet connections and current limitations in technology, understand that you may need to adjust the way you speak when interacting--speaking slowly, enunciating, allowing enough "wait time", speaking directly into the microphone, and patience are good rules of thumb.
