The Laptop, Projector, & Camera

SETTING UP THE PRESENTATION

Picture of cart set up for iSight videoconference presentation

You have been provided a PowerBook G4 Computer, the iSight Camera, speakers, and a DVI Projector on an AV cart as shown on the right.

Set up the PowerBook on the top of the AV cart. When opening the case, the apple should look upside down to the user. (When it opens, it is displayed right side up to the audience.) If the PowerBook is not charged, use the power cord to connect the computer to the cart. Plug the cart power cord into the wall. The PowerBook must be charged in order to use its wireless capability.

For use with a projector that does not have DVI:

To connect the DVI projector, you need to use the DVI Cable adapter that comes with your laptop. (It is the short white cord that has two wide connector ends.) The easiest way to tell where to attach this cable is to look at the ends, and match the designs to the ports on the projector cable and on the computer. There is only one port that will work for each. The DVI port is on the right side of the laptop closest to the screen.

Connect the external speakers to the computer. Place them in the location on the cart where they work the best. We recommend placing the speakers on the lowest shelf, far away from the iSight microphone, to avoid distortion. You might need to use a power strip on the cart if you are using the speakers because the cart only has two outlets.

We recommend placing the DVI projector on the middle shelf of the AV cart. Plug its power cord into power strip.

CONNECTING THE PROJECTOR

To connect the DVI projector, you need to use the DVI Cable adapter that comes with your laptop. (It is the short white cord that has two wide connector ends.) The easiest way to tell where to attach this cable is to look at the ends, and match the designs to the ports on the projector and on the computer. There is only one port that will work for each. The DVI port is on the right side of the laptop closest to the screen. I found that there is another adapter needed between the open end of the DVI Cable and the black cable that must connect to the projector. This second adapter might be blue. These connectors should fit easily, and tighten securely when you turn the little screws on either side of them. NEVER USE FORCE TO INSERT ANY CONNECTOR. If you must force it, then it probably does not fit.

Once the cables are connected, make sure the projector is plugged into the AV cart, and that the COMPUTER IS OFF. It is recommended that you connect and start the projector first and then start the computer. Allow the projector a few minutes to warm up before questioning the correctness of the setup.

NOTE: The PowerBook is supposed to automatically detect the projector, as long as the projector is turned on before the computer is. You may use the Display panel to adjust the resolution of the display.

DISPLAYING COMPUTER SCREEN THROUGH PROJECTOR

If the display on the computer screen is not showing through the projector, try this:
Find the icon that looks like a TV or screen display (at the top right side of the PowerBook screen). If it is not visible, then click on the Apple icon on the far left to access a menu. Select > System Preferences from this menu, and then select > Displays. In the Displays menu, you want to make sure that "Turn off mirroring" is NOT checked. Mirroring is the term for when you can view the same screen both on your laptop and on the projected image.

NOTE: When you are done with the projector turn it off by clicking the power button twice. Do not unplug until fan on the projector stops.
