PowerPoint – Advanced Options
Adding a Design:
To
add a design to your PowerPoint slide presentation, click on the Format menu
at the top of the screen, then “Slide Design.” Notice that PowerPoint
allows you to view the different designs available. Choose a design for your
project.
When adding a new slide, note that PowerPoint allows you to choose the layout of the slide from their templates. This is very handy as you don’t have to create the layout yourself. Choose a layout with text and an image. When adding an image, be sure to click on the image icon – the one with the man on it. This will allow you to choose an image from a file or from clip art.
To import a clip, click “import” in the clip menu. Browse to the correct folder, chose the clip and click OK.
Adding a Graph:
Note that you
can also use the graph feature in PowerPoint to display features. This is an
excellent feature in a classroom to illustrate numerical values to your spatial
learners. To add a graph, click on the graph icon
.
The graph datasheet will automatically open, and you can use this window to
insert your data.

Adding Animation:
To add animation to an image or text, right click on the image or text selected. Click on “Custom Animation.” You can preview the effects by clicking the box on the bottom right had corner labeled “Preview Effect.” You can add effects to both images and text. To emphasize text, you can add features to darken or enlarge text. You can also change the color of the text. Any and all features that you add create a change when you click the mouse in the presentation mode.
Play around with these features a little until you find something you like that is appropriate for your slide show.
Adding Sound:
To add sound, right click on the image or text, and click “Action Settings.” An Action Settings window will pop up and should look something like this:

Here you can add sound by clicking the box next to “play sound” and choosing the sound you wish to apply.
Note: You can also add hyperlinks with this window if you wish to jump to a different slide or access a website. Simply click the option next to “Hyperlink to:” and choose your option.
Importing an Excel Chart:
You can also import
your excel chart into your PowerPoint slide show. Insert a chart slide into
your project. Double click to insert a chart, and then delete the chart ONLY
from the slide. From the Edit menu, choose “Import File.” Browse
to where your Excel spreadsheet is saved, and double-click. When the Import
Data Options window pops up, click on the name of your chart (probably “Chart1”),
then click OK. Your chart will appear in the chart area on the slide. You can
also copy and paste your chart into PowerPoint.
