Ligon High School Historians

Ligon Alumni

An enthusiastic group of Ligon High School alumni began working in December of 1998 with Ligon Middle School students and teachers and North Carolina State University professors and students to write a history of Ligon High School and Southeast Raleigh. The project is funded by grants from Wake Education Partnership and North Carolina State University.

Ligon Middle School Participants

Ligon Historians Taheena, Crystal, Michelle, and Candace entered the names of students who graduated from Ligon High School into a database.
Ligon students participate in various aspects of the project. Journalism students record class lists and collect oral histories from the Ligon High School alumni.  Selected sixth grade science students  investigate tree rings cut from large oak trees cut from the property during renovation and create a display called "If Trees Could Talk" to connect the history of the school to the growth of the tree. Wake County Heritage students report on buildings of historical significance in the downtown Raleigh area. Students in Satellites, Computers, and Mapping document change over time using GIS technology. The Ligon Historians class record the history of Chavis Heights.
