Tips for Success
What should I do now to prepare myself for college?
Dr.Charles Haywood is a J.W. Ligon High School alumni who now serves as
an Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at North Carolina State
University. He gives great advice to help middle school students prepare
for college and to have a successful life. He gave us a lot of advice we
can use in our daily life.
-
Choose your friends carefully. You can be a nice person, but if you hang
out with the wrong crowd people can judge you as if you are the bad person.
Sometimes friends can influence you to do the wrong things.
-
Stay out of trouble.
-
Work hard in school. Don’t just pick the easy courses. Choose many different
courses. Challenge yourself. And do it with a smile on your face.
-
Do well in all your courses. Work to the best of your ability even if you
don’t like them. You will need them some day.
-
Learn how to learn. That is the real value of school.
-
Love reading. It is probably the most valuable skill you will learn in
school. Reading is the key to learning all kinds of things.
-
Learn everything you can all your life.
-
Have a vision of a successful life. Set goals.
-
Find a career that will help you to be a self-supporting person who contributes
to society.
-
Choose a school that will help you to achieve your goals. Colleges specialize
in different areas. You may not need to go to college. It may be better
for you to go to a vocational school or learn a trade.
-
If you go to college, take advantage of all the opportunities. Meet people
from all over the world and discuss ideas. It helps you define your views.
Enjoy the fine arts, social activities, travel, and extra curricular activities.
Become a well-rounded person.
Dr. Haywood gave us a lot of excellent advice. The best advice he gave
us came from the way he lives his life. He had dreams. He set goals to
achieve his dreams. He worked hard to achieve his goals. He loves his family
and his work. He will keep learning and helping other people as long as
he lives.
