No longer will "You're dumb," "You're stupid," or IQ jokes be cut downs because our next stop is Howard Gardner. Gardner is a professor at Harvard University and he believes that there isn't just one type of smart (or intelligence). There are actually 8! And the coolest part of all is that everybody has their own strengths and weaknesses. Take a look at the 8 intelligences--or ways of being smart.

1) Logistical / Mathematical
2) Linquistic (Language)
3) Visual / Spatial
4) Bodily-Kinesthetic
5) Musical
6) Interpersonal
7) Intrapersonal
8) Naturalist

Now let's explain these in plain English!

  • Logistical / Mathematical simply means that those with strength in this intelligence like things to be logical and straight forward. Most of the time these folks really like math.
  • Linquistic (Language) as you guessed it is when people show strengths in writing and speaking.
  • Visual / Spatial. Now don't let these words freak you out--all they mean is that people with this type of intelligence really like to see things--they like pictures and diagrams rather than words and paragraphs. Cool, huh?!
  • Bodily-Kinesthetic. Okay, don't let this one bother you either. People that have this intelligence like to move around. These are the people who just can't wait to get to PE!
  • Musical intelligence describes people who learn best with music and musical things. Do you like to study with your headphones on? You might just be musically smart!
  • Interpersonal and Intrapersonal are kind of opposites. Interpersonal intelligence means that you get along great with other people--you like talking and building relationships. Intrapersonal intelligence is for those that prefer to be alone with their own thoughts and like to turn inwards and communicate with themselves. Don't act like you've never talked to yourself before! (Remember James' need to move inward? All of this stuff is linked together!)
  • Finally, Naturalist intelligence. Those that identify with this intelligence are able to relate well with nature and really enjoy learning outside.

Got it??

Want to see in what ways you are smart? Click here and take the online test to find out! Don't forget to hit your Back button to return to this page when you are finished.

Welcome back! What ways are you smart? Mathematical? Bodily-kinesthetic? Write it down somewhere in case you forget!

So what do we do with this once we've figured it all out? Well, not only are you smart in certain areas--these are also the ways in which you learn best. Think back to a great teacher that you have had. Let's say that your strongest intelligence was bodily-kinesthetic. There is a strong possibility that your great teacher stands out in your mind because he/she gave you opportunities to move around the room and tap into you bodily-kinesthetic intelligence. Make sense?

Let's get one thing straight though. Even though you have your strengths--you should always work on the other "smarts" that you not as strong in. Questions? Let me know!

Hold on tight because the next stop on our journey will be Coat Racks and Cobwebs. Check back soon!
