College of Education Guidelines and Standards
Below is a list of guidelines that must be followed on any and all Web pages associated with the university, not just with the College of Education. A complete list of all guidelines and standards, as outlined by Federal law (the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973), can be accessed at http://www.itd.ncsu.edu/access/development/standards/standards.php. NC State is required to comply with these legal requirements.
- All Web pages must have a title.
- Meta tags must be used in the site (author and keyword meta tags).
- If a background color (or image) is used, it must be defined in the HTML coding. Link colors must be defined, also.
- Pages must have a link to the NCSU home page using the NCSU logo, as well as internal links back to the appropriate departments/colleges and the Web site's own home page.
- Headings must be used appropriately (for each page or section).
- Font size and style should remain consistent among all site pages.
- A "mailto" link should be included as part of the contact information for the site.
- A last modified date should be included on (at least) the main page of the Web site.
- All images should be optimized for the Web (to less than 30K if possible).
- All images must have alt tags. Screen readers read these alt tags making the Web page more usable to a greater audience. Without alt tags, users with special needs may not be able to fully access your page.
- Tables (or frames, if appropriate) are used for page layout and control.
- GIF and JPG formats should be used appropriately (ex. GIF - logos, JPG - photorealistic).
- The Web page must have been published to an appropriate URL.
- The Web page cannot have any missing images.
- The Web page cannot have any broken links.
- If audio is used in the Web page, a link to the appropriate plug-in must be provided.
- If video is used in the Web page, a link to the appropriate plug-in
must be provided.
These laws are designed to optimize Web usage among individuals who have problems reading or understanding Web pages for various reasons by eliminating the potential barriers faced by these individuals. These barriers include incomplete or no descriptions/summaries of images and/or tables (if used), difficult navigation, inappropriate usage of color, poor color contrast, and complex tables that are difficult to understand even when read by a screen reader.
If you are unsure whether or not your Web site is in accordance with the law, you can go to www.cast.org/bobby or http://wave.webaim.org/index.jsp and have them check your page. This is a free service. Simply provide your Web page's URL, and they will send back a report about your page.
Templates and Resources
The following table contains items that you may wish to include on your
Web site; however,
the College of Education logo and the red NC State logo are required on
all top-level pages. Information is provided so that images can be obtained
(click on the image or the link provided to the right of the image) and
colors can be matched. The colors listed below are the prominent colors
of the design.
The following logos must appear at the top of every CED Web page. |
