Student Owned Computing: Software

University Site Licenses

The University has established license agreements with a number of software manufacturers. These licenses allow eligible students, faculty or staff to obtain certain software titles at a lower than retail cost, though terms and prices vary with each agreement. The NC State Software Site Licenses and Agreements page contains a listing of the software manufacturers with whom the University has license agreements, and links to pages detailing each agreement.

For instance, under the University's Symantec license agreement, all currently enrolled students, faculty and staff can download Norton AntiVirus free of charge for use on their campus and home computers. Downloading NAV requires valid Unity ID and password. Redistribution of the software, of course, is not allowed.

Similarly, the University received a grant from the SAS Institute that lasts through December 2004. Under this grant, students, faculty and staff can obtain a license for SAS Institute products (SAS, JMP, StatView, etc.) free of charge. Simply fill out the SAS Software Registration Form, found on the SAS Index page.

Educationally Priced Software

While students can not take advantage of all of the University's license agreements, you can often purchase software titles at an educational discount. The Computer Connections department of the NCSU Bookstore carries many academically priced titles.

The NCSU Bookstore prices are usually competitive with educational discount software vendors, such as JourneyEd, CampusTech and Computer Products for Education. A little comparison shopping can help you find the best price available.
