Noldus Observer 5
Noldus Observer is a manual event recording application. That is, it
allows a researcher to code or classify behaviors or verbalizations for
statistical analysis.
This software and equipment is located in the Multimedia Lab and is
for use by students taking qualitative research courses (EAC785,
EAC790, ELP736, ELP737, ELP754 and EMS731). The software and drivers
for the hardware described on this page are installed on Dell 2 and
Dell 3.
Students wishing to use the Multimedia Lab during non-class hours will
need to leave their Campus ID with the Lab Attendant on duty in the
Media Center or with the Poe IT staff.
• When logging on to the computer with the Observer account, the user may see
an error message indicating no X-keys were found. Just click OK and continue. The X-keys
keyboard will
work fine when it is plugged in.
IC
Recorders
Two Sony ICD-SX25 Digital Recorders are on reserve for class use in the CED Media Center.
• The IC Recorders have three memory 'folders'
(A, B and C) which allow you to organize your recordings. Each folder
has access to the recorder's full memory, but any individual folder can
only contain a maximum of 99 separate recordings.
• Turning On/Off
The recorders
have no 'power' button, but you can turn the Display on and off by
using the Hold switch on the
back.
• Recording Modes (for all folders, combined)
| Mode |
Total Recording Time |
| ST (standard play, stereo) |
1 hour, 25 min |
| STLP (long play, stereo) |
2 hours, 45 min |
| SP (standard play, mono) |
4 hours, 20 min |
| LP (long play, mono) |
11 hours, 35 min |
Provided the
sound quality is acceptable, using LP mode is recommended. In addition
to greater recording times, it
results in greater battery life, as well.
To change Recording Mode, push the jog lever in the Menu direction
until MODE appears in the
display. Then press the center of the jog
lever to select the Mode menu -- the currently selected mode should
begin blinking. Then press the jog lever forward and backward to select
the mode you want. Press the center of the jog lever again when you've
selected the desired mode and then press the jog lever in the Menu
direction to return to the standard display.
• The IC Recorder bags include an USB A to USB Mini B cable for
connecting the IC Recorder to the computer. The Mini B connector on the
recorder is under the rubber flap opposite the jog lever.
• Common Problems
The Recorder does
not operate
- Batteries may
be dead
- Batteries may have been inserted with incorrect
polarity
- The HOLD switch may be on, locking the unit
Indicator
displays FULL and the unit
will not record
- The recorder's memory is full. Erase
some files.
- There are 99 recordings in the selected folder.
Select another folder or erase some files.
Extraneous Noise During Playback
- To minimize picking up extraneous noise, do not
place the IC Recorder
near an AC power source, mobile phone, or fluorescent light when
recording. Similarly, do not place it near such devices during playback.
Digital Voice Editor
The Digital Voice Editor 2 software is used to transfer recorded files
from IC-Recorder to computer, to control playback, and for bookmarking
and editing recorded files. DVE2 can handle
audio files in WAV, MP3, DVF (the
digital recorder's format), and MSV (Memory Stick Voice) formats.
• When launching DVE you may be asked to specify the model of voice
recorder. Select ICD-SX Series.
• In DVE the IC-Recorder is displayed in window to the left and the
computer is displayed in the window to the right. To transfer
recordings to the computer, highlight a file in the recorder window and
drag it to the computer window.
• To delete audio files from the IC-Recorder, right-click on the files
and select Delete from the
menu.
• To rename an audio file, right-click on it and select Rename Message.

X-keys SE
Jog & Shuttle Pro
The X-keys are programmable keyboards that connect to the computer via
USB. With the Macro Manager software installed on the computers, users
can
assign keystrokes, mouse clicks, scrolls, etc to the keys of the X-keys.
• To create a layout:
1) Plug in the
X-keys SE to one of the USB ports on the computer.
2) Open Macro
Manager.
3) Click Create Layout to launch Macro Maker.
4) To assign a function to one of the X-key SE's
keys, right-click the corresponding button and select Create/Edit Macro from the
drop-down menu.
5) Give the macro a descriptive name in the
Caption field.
6) Click on Start and begin typing. The Macro Maker will record your keystrokes. Click Stop when you're finished typing
your macro.
7) Continue Steps 4 through 6 until you've
assigned all your macros.
8) Go to the File menu and Save As your layout.
9) Go to the File menu and select Assign to Device to make your layout active.
10) Close the Macro Maker and click OK in the Macro Manager window. To test your layout, open a blank document in Word and
press the X-key SE keys that you just programmed. You should see your
macros entered in the Word document.
• Also on the computers is X-keys Legend Maker, an application that
lets
you print out a legend of the X-keys based on the captions you assigned
your macros. For further information see the X-keys Legend
Maker tutorial. There are no printers in the Multimedia Lab, so
students will have to print their legends to PDF via pdfFactory Pro and
take the PDF to another lab to print.
