Configuring the Network Settings of your Windows 95/98/NT or Windows 2000/XP laptop for Nomadic Computing
Don't forget to record your existing network settings before changing them to work with Nomadic Computing -- you will need them in order to reconfigure your computer for your home or office network.


Windows 95/98/NT
Click START and go to Settings.
Select Control Panels and open the Network control panel.
Select the Configuration tab (Win95/98) or the Protocols tab (WinNT).
Select the TCP/IP Protocol for your ethernet or wireless ethernet card and click Properties.
Under the IP Address tab select the option to 'Obtain an IP address automatically.'

Under the DNS Configuration tab, add 152.1.1.206 and 152.1.1.161 to the DNS Server Search Order.

Click 'Apply' and 'OK' until you are returned to the Network panel.

If you're using a wireless ethernet card:

Select the Adatpers tab.

Highlight your wireless card in the Network Adapters list and click Properties.

In the properties window should be a field called 'Network Name' or SSID (the name of the wireless network to which you are connecting). Enter 'ncsu' in this field.

'OK' your way out of the Network control panel and reboot your computer if prompted to do so.

Windows 2000/XP
Right-click on My Network Places and select Properties.

If you already have a connection setting that uses the connection type you will be using in Poe (either ethernet or wireless), right-click on it and select Properties. Otherwise choose Create New Connection.

From the list of Components, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click the Properties button.

Choose the setting 'Obtain an IP address automatically.'

Click the Advanced button and select the DNS tab.

Add 152.1.1.206 and 152.1.1.248 to the DNS server addresses.

Make sure the 'Register this connection's addresses in DNS' option is not selected.

'OK' your way back to the Connection Properties window.

If you're using a wireless network card:

Select the Wireless Networks tab.

Enter 'ncsu' in the 'Network Name (SSID)' field or select 'ncsu' from the 'Available networks' so that the computer knows which wireless network it should connect to.
