Novell Access for Macintosh

Macs can access the College's Novell server by means of Native File Access (NFA) -- an addition to Netware server that allows Macs to connect using Apple's built-in Apple Filing Protocol. In order to access the CED3 file server from a Mac, we need to create an NFA (simple) password for your CED network account. Send an email request to the CED Help Desk and we will set a temporary password for you which you can change the first time you login. If you also use Windows in the College, please note that this Mac Novell password is independent of the Novell password you use when logging in from a Windows computer.

How do I get an account with access to the College's CED file servers?

If you do not have an account on the College's local area network (that is, an account whose Novell Context includes ".cep.ncsu"), you can apply for one by filling in the on-line application form located on our Help Page. Usually you can expect to get your account within 48 hours of filling out the form.

Requesting NFA access

If you already have an account on the College's LAN, but are unable to access the server from your Mac, we need to create an NFA (simple) password for your account. Please send an email to our Help Desk with subject "Mac native file access."

We will set a temporary password for you, which you will need to change the first time you login to CED3.

How do I get a Class Folder on CED3?

If you are teaching a course in one of our labs and would like space on the CED3 Server, you can apply for a class folder by filling out the available form on our Forms Page. Class folders on CED3 can be accessed from both Macintosh and Windows-based computers on campus. Please note, these are not web lockers like the Wolfware system, nor are they accessible by students from off-campus.*
  • By default, class folders are initially set to 50 MB, but can be increased upon the instructor's request up to 500 MB. The instructor is given full rights to the class folder and all subfolders.
  • Students have read-only access to the class folder itself.
  • If you so indicate on the web form, a Drop Box will be created within the class folder. Students are given write-only access to the drop box, meaning they can submit home work assignments by copying their work to the drop box, but they cannot see anyone's submitted files.
  • If you would also like there to be some place that your students can save files they're working on, check the Student Folder option on the web form and we will create a Student folder within the class folder.

Is it possible to create a folder on CED3 for my Research?

If you would like space on the CED3 to use in the course of your research, you can apply for a Research Folder using the on-line form available on our Help Page. You can also indicate on the form any graduate students you would like to have access to your Research Folder.

Where do I find my: home / departmental / class / research folder?

Root of CED3 DataOnce you've logged in, open CED3.DATA on your desktop.

Your personal Home folder resides in the Home directory, of course. Users can store up to 50 MB of files in their Home folders on CED3. Since CED3 is backed up regularly, your Home folder is a convenient location to back up any important files you have.

Similarly, if you have a class folder on CED3, it can be found within the Classfolders directory.

Each department in the College has a directory in which departmental files (policies, memos, etc) can be stored and accessed by the department's faculty and staff. Departmental folders are located in the Share folder on CED3.DATA.

Research folders are also housed in Share.

Creating desktop aliases or shortcuts, for instance to your individual Home folder, can simplify opening frequently accessed resources on CED3.

L
ogging in to CED3 from home is no different from logging in from your office computer. The only restrictions are that you have an internet service provider and your Mac is running OS 8.1 or higher.
