The college's Mac OS X users have three avenues by which they can access their GroupWise mail (actually four, including handheld access): GroupWise 7 Java Client, IMAP and WebAccess. All three allow you to receive & send mail & attachments, though only GroupWise 7 and WebAccess allow you to access your calendar and configure vacation rules.

As of September 2006, GroupWise 5.2.8 for Mac OS Classic is no longer compatible with the college's GroupWise system.

GroupWise WebAccess

With WebAccess you can read your GroupWise mail from any computer (Mac or Windows) that has internet access and a web browser. Just direct your browser to http://gwced.ncsu.edu and enter your GroupWise login name and password. If you are using a slow internet connection, try the Simple HTML address which strips out most of the graphics and loads faster.

GroupWise 7 Java Client on Mac OS X

Novell's cross-platform GroupWise 7 Java Client runs natively in Mac OS X 10.3.4 and Java 1.4.2 (both available through Software Update if you're computer is running OS X 10.3).  The application is available on CD along with the necessary system updates from the CED Help Desk (515-1760, Poe 412-D). Installation instructions are included on the CD.

The first time you launch the application, enter gwced.ncsu.edu in the Address field and 1677 in the Port field.

For assistance configuring Thunderbird or other IMAP mail clients, please contact the CED Help Desk @ 5-1760.

Forwarding Unity Email to GroupWise Account

ITD will autoforward your Unity email to another address at your request. According to Rules and Procedures

Unity/EOS account holders can have their e-mail forwarded to a different e-mail account. The requests must come from the Unity e-mail account for which mail is to be forwarded, and must provide the full Internet address to which the e-mail is to be forwarded. Requests for mail forwarding should be sent to  accounts@ncsu.edu.  E-mail will be forwarded for a year, by default. However, requests for forwarding can be made for up to 5 years. It will be the responsibility of the account holder to inform ITD in the even that their forwarding address has changed.

To send this request from your Unity account you can use NCSU Webmail if you don't have another mail client already configured for Unity email. The full internet address of your GroupWise account is your GroupWise login name @gwced.ncsu.edu.

Transferring GroupWise Address Books to Thunderbird

IMAP mail clients cannot access address books you have created in the GroupWise mail client. If you have recently switched from the GroupWise client (for Mac or for Windows) to Thunderbird (Mac or Windows), we can convert your GroupWise address books to a format recognized by Thunderbird. Email your request to our Help Desk.

While Thunderbird is not able to access GroupWise's System Address Book of all campus GroupWise users, it can be configured to perform lookups against the NCSU LDAP server which contains email addresses for all campus users. To add LDAP lookups to Thunderbird:

  1. In Thunderbird go to the Tools menu and select Address Book
  2. In the Address Book window go to the File menu, select New, and then LDAP Directory
  3. Enter something descriptive in the Name field, like NCSU LDAP or NCSU Online Directory
  4. In the Hostname field enter ldap.ncsu.edu
  5. In the Base DN field enter (without any spaces) ou=people,dc=ncsu,dc=edu
  6. Click OK when and close the Address Book window

To use your new address book, click the Write button in your Thunderbird tool bar to start composing a new email. In the composition window click the Contacts button in the tool bar. In the Contacts bar that appears go to the Address Book pull-down menu and select the LDAP directory you created above. Type in a name in the Search For field. When you find the person you're looking for, just double-click his/her name.

GroupWise 7 Java Client

In GroupWise 7 go to the GroupWise menu and select Preferences. In the General settings window select a default font and size for composing and reading.

Archiving Old Email

Archiving refers to storing mail or calendar items in a location other than the mail server. You can choose to archive mail to your computer's hard drive or to your Home space on the CED3 file server.

GroupWise 7 Java Client
    1. In GroupWise 7 select Preferences under the GroupWise menu.
    2. Select General from the navigation bar to the left.
    3. Click the folder icon next to the Archive directory field and browse to the folder where you want to archive your mail and click Choose.
    4. In your GroupWise mailbox highlight the message(s) you wish to archive (hold down the Shift key to select multiple messages) and select Move to Archive from the Actions menu.
Successfully archived messages will disappear from your GroupWise mailbox. To read archived messages, click on Online (just above your name in the navigation bar) and select Archive from the pull down menu. The Online indicator will now read Archive and your archived messages will be visible. To return to your active mailbox, click on Archive and select your name from the pull down menu. The indicator should read Online once again.

Please note: The archiving process will create a folder with a strange name like "oflqqarc" in the location you selected in Step 3 above. Do not delete this folder or its contents or you will permanently lose your archived mail.

Thunderbird
    1. In Thunderbird select Local Folders from the Folders navigation bar on the left side of the window.
    2. Go to the File menu and select New and then Folder
    3. Give the folder a name and click OK
You should now see that folder listed among the Local Folders. To transfer messages from the GroupWise server to your local hard drive you can either drag the message to the local folder or with the Move command in the Message menu.
