Spam Filtering
Spam filtering is not an exact science, especially when
you consider that spammers are constantly modifying their mailings in
an attempt to circumvent spam filters. CED's GroupWise spam filtering
works in the same manner as most major spam filters -- various characteristics
of incoming emails are assigned point values, and emails with point
totals that exceed some set limit are filtered out.
Using this method, many emails are clearly identified as being spam
(by containing characteristics or phrases that are assigned high point
values -- you know what they are). But some email may receive point
totals that only allow the system to indicate they are "probably" spam.
Filtering messages in this grey area will stop a lot of spam, but may
also filter out the occasional legitimate email.
For instance, let's say an incoming email receives 3 points for having
the header "Work from home," 1 point for containing "no credit" in the
body of the email, and 2.5 points for originating from a mail domain
known for being used by spammers, for a total of 6.5 points. If the
filtering point is set to 6, this email would get filtered, which would
be the proper thing to do if it's a typical 'work from home/build your
credit' spam. However, it's possible that you just used your freemail.com
account to tell your teaching assistant that you'll be working from
home today, and could she contact the students who received no credit
for their participation in last week's psychology experiment.
To avoid filtering out these false positives, mail that the system identifies
as "probably" but not "definitely" spam will be tagged with a s-p-a-m
header and passed along to the recipient. A network roll out will update
the GroupWise Client for Windows so that it automatically filters these
messages into a spam folder in the recipient's mail box so he or she
can quickly look through them for legitimate emails before deleting
them.
However, folks who normally access their GroupWise mail through WebAccess, the old GroupWise for Mac Client
or the cross platform Java Client will need to set up their own spam folder and rule by following the
instructions below. Instructions for the GroupWise Windows Client are also
included in case the automatic rollout misses some.
