AOL Instant Messenger (“AIM”) for synchronous online discussion forums:

Go to: http://www.aim.com/ and download AIM.

If you are not already a member, click the “New Users Click Here” link. The program will walk you through the registration process, including establishment of a screen name. You will be asked to choose your platform: Windows or Macintosh.

Save the .exe file to your Desktop for easy access. When the download is complete, click “Open.” The AIM Setup Wizard will walk you through the installation process. Be sure to read the questions carefully so that any unnecessary or unwanted information will not download.

Once the program completes the installation process, you will be asked to enter your newly created Screen Name. Enter your password, and click the “sign-on” icon.

If you are new to instant messaging forums, you may chose to complete the AOL Instant Messenger tutorial wizard that walks you through the use of the software, establishment of a buddy list, etc.

You will need to locate your classmates or colleagues and add them to your buddy list. To add names to your buddy list, click on “My AIM” and click on “Set Up Buddy List.”

In the Buddy List screen, click the “add a buddy” icon

Then simply type in the screen name of the buddy you wish to add. When you are finished, click “Return to Buddy List” and you are ready to chat!

If you would like to IM someone who is not on your buddy list, you can do so by clicking the “IM” button in the main window of AIM. This will allow you to enter the screen name of anyone with AOL.

You also have the option to setting up an independent chat room if you have a series of members to join the conversation by clicking on the “chat” icon in the main window of AIM. When wanting to speak with more than one individual at a time, you must start a chat room. Type in the screen names of the individuals invited to the chat. They are notified that you have invited them into the chat room, and if they accept, you will receive a notification. The chat room automatically opens. You can then begin typing your discussion.

TO SAVE YOUR DISCUSSION:

Using AIM, you have the ability to save the text of your discussion, whether you are using the IM or the chat feature. The process is the same for both features.

From the file menu, chose “Save.” Type in a file name and save it in an easily accessible place, such as your desktop. The text of your chat will save as an HTML file (.htm). You can open the text of your chat using any Internet browser (such as IE, Mozilla or Netscape). The file is now saved on your system and can be viewed or emailed independently.
