Dean, College of Education
2000 - Present

Founded in 1927, the College has 150 faculty and staff and more than 1,300 students. Degrees offered include B.S., M.A. and M.Ed., Ed.D. and Ph.D. It has a budget of almost $14 million and grants and contracts totaling $12 million. This is an exciting and powerful time for the College, as we have developed a new strategic plan that will guide our efforts and focus our energies and resources for the years ahead. As a top priority, we are committed to helping North Carolina foster and support more quality K-12 teachers, especially in the critical need areas of math and science education. Our advanced degree programs offer students the chance for exploration and inquiry under the guidance of world-class faculty at a Research I institution. The College’s educational leadership and policy programs are developing tomorrow’s administrators for key positions at the local, state and national levels. Wherever I go in this College, I see a whirlwind of activity – from teacher preparation to classroom innovation and field research – that is evidence of our enthusiasm and dedication to providing real-world solutions for complex educational issues. The future is now for our children and we must be at the forefront of equipping them with the knowledge and skills to be productive, involved citizens in the 21st century. I can think of no greater calling than service to our children.
