Special Education at NC State University is a graduate program in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, College of Education. Our goal is to prepare students for excellence in special education teaching, assessment, curriculum development, evaluation, professional leadership, and other service to schools and agencies. We offer small classes, excellent teaching by nationally recognized faculty, individual attention through faculty advising, collegiality, leadership opportunities, and high standards of learning and performance. Graduates typically are eagerly sought by schools and agencies serving individuals with disabilities.
We offer master's degrees in three areas of study specialization and North Carolina teacher licensure: Behavior Disorders, with Behaviorally-Emotionally Disabled (B-ED) licensure; Learning Disabilities, with Specific Learning Disabled (SLD) licensure; and Mental Retardation (mild-moderate conditions only), with Mentally Disabled (MD) licensure. Students admitted to the program who already have North Carolina initial ("A") licensure can pursue a plan of study of at least 36 graduate credits to meet requirements for the master's degree and North Carolina Advanced Master's ("M") licensure in two of these specializations. Students admitted without A licensure can pursue a plan of study of at least 36 graduate credits plus approximately 6 to 12 additional credits, to meet requirements for the master's degree and A + M licensure in two specializations. It is also possible to pursue a master's degree but no licensure.
An advisor is assigned upon the student's admission to graduate study. The advisor creates plans of study and licensure in consideration of the student's situation. As an approximate guide, below are courses typically taken, by specialization. These courses are supplemented by other courses approved by the advisor to meet requirements.
