Master of Education in Social Studies

The Graduate Program in Secondary Social Studies leads to a Master of Education degree (M.Ed.) and certification for teaching grades 9-12. The master's programs in. Social Studies Education are for individuals who currently hold an “A” teaching license. Those who are interested in an add-on teaching license or enrolling in a lateral entry program, please refer to the Teacher Education Alterntive Teaching information.

You may complete the program on a part-time or full-time basis. Many of the required courses are scheduled at 4:00 p.m. or later.

Application Procedures and Requirements

Once admitted to the Program, each candidate receives both a transcript analysis and an individualized plan of study. Due to the number of applicants, we cannot provide a transcript analysis prior to admission.

Application deadlines for the program are October 1 and March 1. Prior to acceptance, you may matriculate and transfer up to 6 credit hours of relevant coursework. NOTE that only credits taken at or above the 500 level may be applied to the graduate degree.

A complete application includes the following:

• A Graduate School application (available from the Graduate School: 919-515-2872) and fees. Please note on the application that you are applying to: "Curriculum and Instruction - Social Studies."
• Two official copies of all transcripts.
Official scores from either the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT). These tests must have been taken within the time frame stated in the application instructions.
• A brief statement of your career goals.
Three (3) letters of reference from former employers, professional associates or professors on forms provided in the application packet.
An interview scheduled with me by the application deadline. For out-of-town applicants, a telephone interview is acceptable.

Only files that are complete by the deadlines noted above, including test scores and references, will be considered. Successful applicants will be admitted for the following semester.

Admission is competitive, and the number of candidates admitted annually is limited. Graduate School requirements for unconditional acceptance include a 3.0 grade point average for the Bachelor's degree. Preference is given to applicants with majors or concentrations of work in history/social science areas.
