Theory and Practice Relevant to the Specialty: 9 hours Select 9 hours from the following courses. Note that ECI 520 The Teaching of Composition and ECI 723 Teacher as Researcher can be counted in English Education specialty, or in C & I Core. ECI 520 The Teaching of Composition* * Required unless student has prior work in these areas at an advanced level. C. Content for the Specialty : 15 hours Select English hours at the graduate level. Note that ECI 521 Teaching Literature for Young Adults can be counted as part of content for the English specialty. At least 3 hours is required for emphasis in multiculturalism and diversity; e.g.: ENG 525 Variety in Language, ENG 548 African American Literature, ENG 549 Modern African Literature, and ENG 539 Seminar in World Literature. It is recommended that 9 hours be taken in Literature courses in genres or periods where teacher needs to build expertise. Select graduate-level courses from the Department of Curriculum and Instruction or from across the College of Education, or from other colleges, such as CHASS, where appropriate. If candidate does not have computer technology expertise, electives should be made in that area.
