Programs in Curriculum and Instruction Generalist with Curriculum-Instructional Specialist License: Program Overview

The Curriculum and Instruction Generalist (M.Ed.) program leads to a M.Ed. and  Curriculum-Instructional Specialist License. The program requires a minimum of 36 semester hours of course work, including a minimum of 18 hours in curriculum and instruction, a minimum of 9 additional graduate hours in a supporting area of study, and a minimum of 3 hours in research.  For more information on the course of study, see the curriculum display table. The M.Ed. degree requires a summative oral presentation covering program course work. This presentation is completed during the last semester of course work. 

The Curriculum and Instructional Generalist (M.S.) program leads to a M.S. and  Curriculum-Instructional Specialist License. The program requires a minimum of 42 semester hours of course work, including a minimum of 18 hours in curriculum and instruction, a minimum of 9 additional graduate hours in a supporting area of study, and 9 hours in research.  For more information on the course of study, see the curriculum display table.  The M.S. degree requires a thesis, summative oral presentation related to coursework, and an oral defense of the thesis.  M.S. students must have a committee of 3 faculty members to support thesis research.

The PRAXIS specialist exam (Educational Leadership: Administration and Supervision – 0410) must be passed prior to application for the curriculum-instructional specialist license (Level I).  A minimum score of 560 required

Key Objectives and Outcomes of Master's Degree Level (M.Ed. and MS)

1. To prepare professionals who demonstrate effective conceptual understanding of
    discipline-guided inquiry in diverse educational contexts, students will be able to:

  • Synthesize relevant theory and evidence by completing a review of literature.
  • Complete a portfolio that portrays knowledge, performances, and dispositions that demonstrate effective conceptual understanding of instructional assessment and instructional leadership through coaching in diverse educational contexts.

 

2. To prepare professionals who are highly successful as educational leaders in schools and public or private agencies, students will be able to:

  • Compile a portfolio of applied experiences including the facilitation of instructional coaching with educators from diverse contexts, instructional and assessment design, and professional development programming.  
  • Develop knowledge and ability to utilize appropriate tests and measurements to assess program quality.
  • Apply evidence-based practices to learning for students and staff.
  • Complete a critical analysis paper that addresses ill-structured problems in the school organization, e.g., district vision, organizational development, instructional accountability.

 

3. To prepare professionals who are ethical, responsible, and respectful of diverse
teachers, learners, and caregivers, students will be able to:

  • Engage diverse educational community members by completing and self-assessing a formal conference with a caregiver or colleague.
  • Demonstrate an ethical posture related to learner and teacher assessment, program evaluation, and professional practice by applying intermediate ethical concepts in a role-defining conference.

 

Beyond the Master's Degree. Competencies for the 6th-year and doctoral levels build upon and advance knowledge and skill listed for the master's degree level.

Program Completion

A minimum grade point average of "B" is required for completion of the degree. All degree requirements must be completed within 6 years from the date of the first course applied to the program.
