Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

1. What degrees are offered?

At the master’s level, a Master of Education and a Master of Science are offered. For those holding a master’s degree, a PhD program is available.

2. What do I need to do in order to apply for admission to the program?

You will need to complete an application to the NC State Graduate School, in addition to fulfilling departmental requirements.  This information is available at: Admission Requirements and Deadlines

3. What criteria are used for admission to the NC State Curriculum and Instruction Generalist program with license?

When all requested information has been received, the Department will meet and make recommendations for admission to the graduate program.  Selection of students for the Graduate Program in Curriculum and Instruction is based on accomplishments in professional practice, performance on standardized measures of academic abilities, principled commitment to the learner, teaching experience, and professional goals.

4. Are courses available in the evenings?

Yes.  The program has been developed with the working teacher in mind. Most of the Curriculum and Instruction courses are offered between 4:10 and 10:00. Selected courses are offered via distance education.

5. Will there be opportunities to take courses during the summer?

While it is possible to take some courses during the summer, the majority of required course work is offered during the regular fall and spring semesters.

6. Is it important to meet with an adviser in planning the courses I would take as part of my degree program?

Yes!  Once you have been admitted the program, each semester you will be assigned a Personal Identification Number (PIN) in order to register for courses.  This number can only be obtained from your academic advisor. It is very important that you meet with your adviser to outline a plan of work for you program soon after you have been accepted into the program.  Also you should arrange to meet with your advisor prior to registration each semester to discuss your progress toward your degree.

7. What courses will I have to complete in program?

An individual plan of work will be developed for each student.  This plan will be unique to you and will depend on your interests and professional and academic background.  However, every student admitted to the Curriculum and Instruction Generalist with Curriculum and Instruction Specialist License will be required to complete core course requirements  Please see the curriculum display for detailed information about the required course work.

8. Will I have to write a thesis for a master’s degree?

A thesis is required for the Master of Science degree. If you are planning to pursue a PhD, a thesis or an equivalent thereof will be required.  The Master of Education degree does not require a thesis.
