Programs in Curriculum and Instruction Generalist with Curriculum-Instructional Specialist License
The purpose of the program is to prepare educators for positions of leadership in Curriculum & Instruction, an area of increasing importance due to educational reform. Two kinds of leadership functions are envisioned for graduates of the program. One is for individuals at the school level where they may fill positions of departmental or grade-level chairperson, lead teacher, mentor, assistant principal, evaluator, and other specialized roles; here, the emphasis is on instructional supervision and mentoring. The other is for positions in a central office of a local school system, regional centers or other educational leadership and supervisory roles. These positions vary in duties ranging from formative and summative supervision of a curricular area to staff development coordinator to a director of curriculum and instruction. Titles of educational leaders vary; therefore, the program emphasis is on theory, practice, and research related to curriculum, instruction, leadership and development, and supervisory duties at the school, school district, regional, state, and national levels.
The program consists of 3 levels of advanced study: Master's, Intermediate (not a degree), and Doctoral. The Master of Education (M.Ed.) and the Master of Science (M.S.) provide opportunity for students to qualify for the Supervisor's License Level I. The Intermediate program qualifies students for the 6th-year or Level II license in supervision, and the Doctoral degree qualifies one for Level III license in Supervision. The program also serves persons already holding a Master's degree, usually in a teaching area, who seek to meet the initial requirements of the Supervisor's License, Level I. As of Fall 1995, a transition was made from an Ed.D. program to a Ph.D. program.
