Counting of Hours toward the PhD Program

In order to meet the Graduate School required minimum of 72 credits beyond the bachelor's degree for the Ph.D., in accordance with Graduate School policy, some credits may be counted from the student's master's degree program in the Graduate Plan of Work for the Ph.D.

Curriculum and Instruction allows a maximum of 12 credits completed in a master's degree program to be applied to a student's doctoral program, at the discretion of the doctoral advisor and committee.

Curriculum and Instruction allows a maximum of 6 credits of master's thesis to be applied to a student's doctoral program. These 6 thesis credits are in addition to the maximum of 12 credits in a master's degree program. This allowance is at the discretion of the doctoral advisor and committee.

Research Deficiencies and Thesis Equivalent Requirements

Depending upon the graduate level research course work the student has already taken, the advisor or committee may require her or him to take additional research course work and/or engage in additional research activities. This may be required as prerequisites for certain courses in early stages of the doctoral program.

ECI 695, Master's Thesis Research, is required for students who have not demonstrated master's level competence in the design and implementation of an empirically based research project (e.g., quantitative or qualitative). This course should be completed before preliminary exams (see the graduate administrative handbook).
