Curriculum & Instruction
Middle Grades Language Arts/Social Studies (MSL)
The Middle Grades Language Arts and Social Studies (MSL) undergraduate program in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction seeks to prepare teachers who can effectively educate young adolescents, while being responsive to their unique needs, interests, and abilities. Graduates earn licensure for teaching in grades 6-9 in two subject disciplines: language arts and social studies. Even though the Undergraduate Catalog states, "All undergraduate students will be required to have at least a 2.0 GPA in order to graduate," the Department of Curriculum and Instruction requires its students maintain a 2.5 GPA throughout the program. A 2.5 GPA is a statewide requirement to student teach. Therefore, it is likely that all MSL majors will graduate with a higher GPA than required by the university.

How to Become a Middle Grades Education Major in Language Arts and Social Studies (MSL)
Incoming Freshmen:
Any incoming student whose admissions index (AI) is 2.5 or above may major in the MSL program, if space is available.
Internal Transfers:
To transfer from another NC State major, students must have an overall GPA of 2.5 and a GPA of 2.5 in humanities and social science courses. A current student should provide contact information, an essay describing the reason for interest in teaching middle grades language arts and social studies and a copy of current NC State transcript or degree audit, to Dr. John Lee , Program Coordinator, Poe Hall 402N. Materials may be left with Ms. Pauline Ellefson, Undergraduate Secretary, in 520 Poe Hall.
Transfer applications are reviewed twice a year. Therefore, applications should be submitted to 520 Poe Hall by February 28 or September 30.
External Transfers:
Students from other universities who wish to transfer to the MSL program at NC State should first formally apply for admission to North Carolina State University. The Office of Admissions will forward the student's transcript to the Dean of the College of Education. The student's transcript is evaluated by the Dean's office and an Advanced Standing Certificate (ASC) is completed and forwarded to the Department of Curriculum and Instruction for approval or denial. Students must have 2.7 GPA overall plus 30 hours of transferable credit including 6 to 9 semester hours in humanities and social science courses.
To be eligible for a bachelor's degree, transfer students must earn at least 25 of their last 30 hours of credit at NC State while enrolled as a degree candidate.
