Business & Marketing Education, Undergraduate Bachelor of Science Degree

Degree: Bachelor of Science in Business and Marketing Education

Purpose of the Program

The primary purpose of the Business and Marketing Education program is to prepare professional teachers to teach business or marketing courses in the middle and secondary schools. While some graduates may decide to pursue careers in business after completing the program, all graduates are qualified to be licensed by the State of North Carolina as either business or marketing education teachers (grades 7-12). Due to the number of these business and marketing classes in North Carolina schools, the need for qualified teachers continues to increase. The appropriate teacher license for a student is based on his or her type of “content-area” courses and practical experience and will be recommended for either the business teacher license or the marketing teacher license. These licenses are part of the State’s licenses in Career and Technical Education.

Major components of the Business and Marketing Education curriculum include general education requirements of the University, professional education, marketing, and a concentration in business management. Almost all graduates of the program complete the requirements for a business management minor in the College of Management. In addition, all students preparing to teach must balance their academic preparation with meaningful work experience in business and marketing occupations. Refer to the curriculum display for specific course requirements. (program brochure - MS Word)

The Bachelor of Science degree in Business and Marketing Education is located in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, College of Education. Dr. Terrence P. O’Brien, Professor of Marketing Education, is the program coordinator. Dr. O’Brien can be reached at 919-515-1743 (voice) or terry_obrien@ncsu.edu (email).

Business and Marketing Education in the Public Schools

The mission of the Business and Marketing Education courses at the high school level (Grades 9-12) is to prepare students for careers in marketing and management, and for advanced study of marketing and management at community colleges, colleges, and universities. Business and marketing teachers offer high school courses such as Marketing, Management, Strategic Marketing, Advertising and Sales Promotion, Small Business Management, Entrepreneurship, and Fashion Marketing. They also work with area business leaders to provide work place learning experiences for students in the form of shadowing, internships, cooperative education, and apprenticeships. Business and marketing teachers have time planned in their schedule to coordinate activities in the business community. They are usually highly visible among local business leaders and often help school administrators interface with the business community.

Advising the local DECA Chapter, a professional association of business and marketing students, represents another important responsibility of teachers. As advisors, they help students with things such as officer elections, organization of committees, programs of work, social events, civic activities, professional meetings, and leadership development. DECA also has an exciting Competitive Events program in which students compete within their respective career specialties in written and participating events. These competitions are held at District, State, and National Career Development Conferences and offer learning opportunities for students.

Business and Marketing Education teachers may be employed in middle schools where the following courses are offered: Exploring Career Decisions, Exploring Business and Marketing, and Computer Applications. These are semester courses for students in Grades 6-8 that are designed to be exploratory in nature and do not develop specific occupational skills. They are intended to help students better understand the world of work, think about career opportunities, and begin to develop tentative career development plans. The objectives of these courses focus on critical and creative thinking, communication skills, problem solving, leadership and citizenship, career information and planning and the impact of technology on the world of work.
