Alyssa Bryant

Background

Dr. Alyssa Bryant has a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from California State University, Long Beach and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Higher Education from the University of California, Los Angeles. She worked for five years at UCLA’s Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) where she was a research analyst and postdoctoral scholar. Following her years at UCLA, Dr. Bryant worked as an educational researcher at RTI International in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. She came to NC State in fall 2006.

Teaching

Dr. Bryant teaches a variety of doctoral and master’s courses in higher education and student affairs, including History of the College Student Experience in the U.S., Current Issues in Higher Education, Student Characteristics and the College Environment, Administration and Finance in Student Affairs, Gender Studies in Adult and Higher Education, and Research Methods.

Research

Dr. Bryant’s research is comprised of two strands of scholarship – spirituality in higher education and gender issues in higher education. The first strand involves exploring issues of development, identity, and well-being in relation to the spiritual and religious dimensions of students’ lives. Moreover, it also involves examining religious diversity on college campuses – and the associated challenges and opportunities that religious and ideological pluralism present. The second major strand of Dr. Bryant’s research considers gender-related issues on campus, including identifying the extent to which college is a gendered experience for students and delineating ways to enhance equity in postsecondary education. Recent selected publications include:

Bryant, A. N. (in press). Negotiating the complementarian gender ideology of an evangelical student subculture: Further evidence from women’s narratives. Gender and Education.
