Overview
The Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree in Training and Development is an online degree program designed for entering or experienced training professionals who work in internal or external training positions in business and industry. The program is structured around a core body of knowledge in adult education and principles and theories of human performance improvement and instructional design. The curriculum builds advanced understandings and skills in program design and the applications of learning theory incorporating principles, research, and practice. The degree program is built on principles of adult learning emphasizing interaction, collaboration, and team learning. It is also designed primarily for the working adult completing graduate studies on a part-time basis. Courses are delivered using the Internet and integrated multimedia.
The program is based on a reflective practice approach offering practitioners opportunities to reflectively and critically integrate their professional experiences with human resource development knowledge and practice skills. Individuals completing this master's program will have sufficient professional knowledge and skill for entry or advancement in instructional design, and instructional, administrative, or evaluation positions that involve performance-based training.
Course of Study
The program has a minimum requirement of 36 hours of course work. In addition, all graduate students are expected to pass the Adult and Higher Education technology competencies through a testing out procedure. Further information is noted on the department's technology web page.
Any course work taken prior to admission is subject to approval by the student's advisor for inclusion in the program. Within the 36 minimum hours, the following should be included:
1. Adult Education Core Courses (6 hours)

EAC 559 - The Adult Learning Theory
2. Training and Development Core Courses (6 hours)
EAC 580 - Designing Instructional Systems
EAC 582 - Organization and Operation of Training and Development Programs
3. Specialization (18 hours)
EAC 583 - Needs Assessment and Task Analysis
EAC 584 - Evaluating Training Transfer and Effectiveness
EAC 581 - Advanced Instructional Design
EAC 586 - Methods and Techniques of Training and Development
EAC 585 - Integrating Technology into Training Design
EAC 555 - Ethics and HRD
4. Research Course (3 hours)
EAC 551- Research in Adult and Higher Education
5. Capstone Project (3 hours)
EAC 692 - Masters Research Project
MEd students will enroll in EAC 692 to write a comprehensive, capstone paper to be negotiated between advisor and student. The capstone will describe a platform of practice. This platform of practice must demonstrate that students are (1) knowledgeable about the foundations of the field, (2) knowledge about reflective practice, (3) capable of coherent thinking and the systematic and organized communication of ideas, and (4) able to apply the multiple areas of study in their programs to emerging issues in the field.
Program Completion: 36 Hours Total (minimum requirement)
