Overview

The Master of Science (M.S.) with a specialization in Human Resource Development (HRD) is designed for experienced professionals who seek advanced professional preparation for researching, managing, and implementing learning and development programs and services in various organizational contexts, including for-profit, non-profit, public, and government.

The HRD program offers a theoretical and practical combination of activities related to HRD in complex real-world learning and development contexts and organizational settings. The MS in HRD curriculum links the theoretical and conceptual foundations of learning and development research to issues that regularly face HRD and T&D professionals, chief learning officers, learning organizations, and consultants.  Upon completion of the MS, learners will have developed the capacity to link research and practice, and be able to contribute advanced expertise to organizations seeking to develop learning systems and cultures.

Admission Requirements

The department considers the following factors in determining the admission of an applicant to the program:

  • A summary of proposed program goals and future outcomes.
  • Three letters of recommendation.
  • Preferred undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).
  • Standardized examination: Graduate Record Examination (GRE) — a score at or above the 45th percentile is preferred on the quantitative and verbal sections of the test.
  • Resumé.

Course of Study

The MS program reflects a minimum requirement of 39 hours of course work including a thesis.  In addition, all graduate students are expected to pass the AHE technology competencies through a testing out procedure. Further information is noted on the department's technology web page.

Any course work taken prior to admission is subject to approval by the student’s advisor for inclusion in the program. Within the 39 minimum hours, the following should be included:

EAC 795v Organizational Learning
EAC 556 Organizational Change in HRD: Theory and Practice
EAC 551 Introduction to Research in Adult & Higher Education

Research Component (6 hours)

ST 507 Statistics for Behavioral Science

And one of the following courses:
PA 515 Research Methods and Analysis
EAC 785 - Qualitative Research in AHE
EAC 720 Use of Secondary Survey Data in AHE (3hrs)

Program Completion: 39 hours total (minimum requirement)

Thesis component (6 hours)
EAC 695 Master’s Thesis Research

Electives or Minor

(to be selected in consultation with your advisor. Students are encouraged to select a minimum of 6 hours outside the Adult and Higher Education department.
