Overview

The Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree with a specialization in Student Affairs is designed for entering and experienced educators who seek advanced professional preparation for managing and administering student support services in higher educational environments. This program blends a broad overview of the history and function of American higher education with specific focus on the unique characteristics of Student Affairs. Practical application is emphasized within coursework and required internship and research experiences. Individuals completing this master's program will have sufficient professional knowledge and skill for entry or advancement in student affairs positions in postsecondary institutions as well as allied positions with governmental agencies and public service organizations that involve education.

Course of Study

The MEd program reflects a minimum requirement of 39 hours of course work. In addition, all graduate students are expected to pass the AHE technology competencies through a testing out procedure. Further information is noted on the department's technology web page.

Any course work taken prior to admission is subject to approval by the student's advisor for inclusion in the program. A suggested course sequence is provided on the student advisory worksheet (see above). Within the 39 minimum hours, the following should be included:

1. Higher Education Core Courses (9 hours)

2a. Student Affairs Specialization (15 hours)

EAC 540 Foundations of Student Affairs
EAC 541 Administration & Finance of Student Affairs
EAC 542 Student Characteristics
EAC 543 Student Development Theory

Counseling Course (Choose One)
ECD 524 Career Counseling and Development
ECD 525 Cross-Cultural Counseling
ECD 530 Theories and Techniques of Counseling
ECD 539 Group Counseling
ECD 540 Gender Issues in Counseling

2b. Organization and Administration Specialization (15 hours)

EAC 700 Community College and two-year postsecondary education
EAC 749 Finance in Higher Education
EAC 787 Organizational Concepts and Theories in Higher Education
6 credit hours in other higher education courses (determined by advisor)

3. Research Component (3 hours)

EAC 551 Research in Adult and Higher Education

4. Practicum/Internship (3 hours)

EAC 651 Internship in Adult and Higher Education

5. Electives or Minor (9 hours)

Students are encouraged to take courses outside of AHE
