NC State Team Wins Grant
A team of NC State faculty and staff was recently awarded a grant to design, implement, evaluate, and disseminate an innovative faculty development program to advance community-engaged scholarship on campus and nationally. The team is led by Patti H. Clayton, director of the Center for Excellence in Curricular Engagement; Audrey J. Jaeger, associate professor of higher education administration, director of the Collaborative for Research on Engagement, and Civically Engaged Scholar with the Center for Excellence; and Jessica Katz Jameson, associate head and associate professor of communication and Civically Engaged Scholar with the Center for Excellence.
Dr. Alyssa Bryant was selected as a 2009 Annuit Coeptis Emerging Professional.
The Annuit Coeptis award was created by the American College Personnel Association to commemorate the life and work of Dr. Philip Tripp. The Latin phrase "annuit coeptis" reflects Professor Tripp's optimism for the future of the profession by suggesting that "the gods have smiled upon that which we have begun." Three senior professionals and five emerging professionals are honored each year.
Studies Examine Impact of Part-Time College Faculty
In a recent article in USA Today, Drs. Jaeger and Umback commented on the findings in their research into the effects of using part-time and other faculty on the quality of students' education. Dr. Jaeger found that as the use of part-time faculty increased, the likelihood for students to obtain a degree diminished. Similarly, Dr. Umbach found that when schools used a large proportion of part-time faculty, it adversely impacted the commitment and performance of full-time faculty.
