New Admissions

The Department of Adult and Higher Education admits new graduate students on the following basis:

Adult and Community College Education (ADE) - M.S. & M.Ed. This program admits twice a year. The deadline for submission of required documents is January 20th for fall admission and September 10th for spring admission.

Adult and Community College Education (ADE) - Ed.D.
This program admits once a year for the fall. The deadline for submission of application materials is January 20th.

Adult and Community College Education Ed.D. – Charlotte Executive Cohort - (ADZ)
Based in Charlotte, this executive cohort will start in Fall, 2009. Early admissions deadline: November 1st, 2008. The regular admissions deadline has been set for February 1st, 2009. Please apply under the category ADZ. Website: http://ahecohort.ncsu.edu/

Higher Education Administration (HED) - M.S., M.Ed., and Ed.D. These programs admit students once a year for Fall semester. The deadline is December 1st for submission of application and supporting documents.

Training and Development (TDZ) - M.Ed. (online - distance education program) - admits twice a year. The deadline for Fall semester is January 20th and for Spring semester is September 10th for submission of application and supporting documents.

Human Resource Development (HRD) - M.S. - admits twice a year. The deadline for Fall semester is January 20th and for Spring semester is September 10th for submission of application and supporting documents.

The admissions process is based in a careful examination of the full record of each applicant. The department has a limited number of openings for the doctoral program and targeted enrollments for the other programs. Prior involvement in either a masters program in AHE or taking coursework as a postbaccaulaureate student does not assure an individual that he or she will be admitted.

The admissions application process involves the following steps:

Applicants

Please complete the electronic application http://www2.acs.ncsu.edu/grad/applygrad.htm and provide the following supporting documents directly to the Graduate School:

  1. The Graduate School requires a non-refundable application processing fee of $65.00US for U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents and $75.00US for Non-Resident Aliens (Internationals). If not remitting by credit card during the application process, you will need to submit a check or money order payable to NC State University (along with the payment voucher if paying by check or money order). Do not submit cash. Please be aware that your application will not be released to your program of interest until your check or money order is received in the Graduate School.
  2. One official transcript from each previously attended college or university, NOT including high school, secondary or elementary school. The transcripts provided should represent a complete post-secondary academic record. Transcripts from coursework taken at NCSU do not need to be requested.
  3. Three recommendations submitted through the Apply Yourself system. Our department does not accept hard copies, all application materials should be submitted electronically through the Apply Yourself system.
  4. On-line North Carolina Residency Form if claiming NC residence for tuition purposes.
  5. The Personal Statement is submitted through the Apply Yourself module which gives instruction on what to include in the document. Please specifically address how your goals align with the desired degree and program. Along with the personal statement document include a Curriculum Vita. ***Both personal statement and curriculum vitae should be submitted as ONE document in order for the Apply Yourself system to accept it as an uploaded document. It should cover the following points:
    • Personal Background
    • Education background to include dates, degrees completed and any honors or recognition
    • Professional and other work experience and pursuits
    • Participation in professional and other associations 5) Any publications and/or scholarly works.
  6. Graduate Record Examination scores (Verbal, Quantitative & Analytical Writing) Scores must be within the last five years. You can register on-line (www.gre.org) Please request that the Educational Testing Service send your GRE scores directly to the University (institution code = 5496). No department code is required.
  7. If you are interested in assistantships or other part-time opportunities through the department, please complete the online form:

    Also send an electronic copy of your resume (in PDF or MS-Word format) to Shana Scott, Graduate Program Assistant, at shana_scott@ncsu.edu, with “Assistantship Resume” in the subject line.
  8. International applicants: In order to be eligible for admission to the Graduate School, all international applicants, regardless of citizenship, must demonstrate proficiency in English at a level necessary to be successful in a graduate program at NC State. Please consult with Graduate Admissions for specific details. In general, applicants should either:
  • Provide Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a total score of at least 80 on the TOEFL Internet-based Test (TOEFL ® iBT).
  • Beginning with applications for the Spring 2009 semester, provide International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores with an overall band score of at least 6.5.
  • be a citizen of a country where English is an official language and the language of instruction in higher education; or
  • have successfully completed at least one year of full-time study in a degree program at a four-year U.S. college or university.
  • TOEFL or IELTS test date must be no older than two years (24 months) prior to the beginning of the requested entry term.

Please note: If you are unable to attend in the semester for which you applied and are accepted, you will need to reapply. The department does not defer admission.

ALL application material should be mailed directly to the Graduate School. No materials need be sent to the department separately.
