Scheduling Information

“There are so many of them, and only one of me!”  How do you decide on which classes to take?  What are GERs?  How do I use my plan of study to schedule courses? Can I take a class that interests me but doesn't meet a GER?

These are just a sample of some of the scheduling-related questions you may have.  Check out the information below to have some of the more common scheduling questions answered – but when in doubt, schedule an appointment with your advisor!

Advising

Meeting/Scheduling an Appointment With Your Advisor:

It is easy to schedule an appointment with your advisor.  In fact, you are encouraged to meet with your advisor often since he/she is the most reliable resource of information, planning, and help for N.C. State students.  Your advisor can be contacted via email or telephone to set up a time convenient for the both of you.  Drop in visits are fine, but schedule an appointment to make sure your advisor isn't in a meeting or with another student.

REGISTRATION HOLDS :

A registration hold is placed on each student's enrollment link in MyPack before the registration period each semester .  In order to have your registration hold removed, you must schedule an appointment and meet with your advisor in person to discuss your academic progress, your plan of work, and your registration plans.  Remember that having your registration hold removed is just a product of the advising process - not the reason for it.  By getting to know your advisor well and speaking with him/her often, you can make sure you are "in the know" and prepared to make well informed decisions while at N.C. State.

"Waitlisting" a Course:

Some courses allow students to "watilist" if the class in question is full.  Waitlisting a course allows you to "get in line" for available spots in the class if someone else should drop it.  Not all courses have waitlists though and don't assume you will get the course just because you are on the waitlist.  Once you waitlist a course, you will be able to tell your rank in line on the list.

8 Semester Display and Degree Audit

The 8 semester displays and degree audits for all College of Education majors are listed at http://www.ncsu.edu/registrar/curricula/education/.  The 8 semester display allows you to view an example sequence of courses you should take each semester and year for a particular major.  The 8 semester display is only one of several useful tools which should be used by students in planning their schedules.  Students should also consult the automated degree audit (ADA) for their major which displays a list of all courses required for graduation in a given major and even provides detailed links to courses and course descriptions.

Registration and Timing

You may wonder when you can register for classes online using the MyPack portal.  Registration and Records sets the general dates for student registration.  The date on which you personally register is typically dependent on the number of semester hours you have completed as well as your participation in any other student programs such as SAY, Teaching Fellows, Scholars, Athletics, etc.  Always consult the "Enrollment Window" option in MyPack for your individual registration date/time and stay in touch with your academic advisor to ensure you don't miss out on important deadlines.
