Goals
- To enable and ensure that the prospective teacher acquires a university education that will enrich his/her life.
- To develop the professional qualities and academic background needed to teach all levels of mathematics or science to all levels of students in the grades for which the teacher is licensed.
Objectives
Each program includes a general and a professional component. The general education component consists of courses and experiences in the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and physical education that promote knowledge and enhance interests associated with a broadly educated person. The professional component consists of four areas:
- General pedagogical knowledge and skills;
- Content-area knowledge and skills;
- Pedagogical content-area knowledge and skills;
- Educational context knowledge.
Pedagogical content-area knowledge, educational context knowledge, and content-area knowledge are emphasized in the preparation of mathematics and science teachers at NCSU.
General and professional knowledge is insufficient for preparation as a teacher. Students must also practice using the knowledge in the appropriate setting. The field experiences in the program provide the opportunity for on-the-job training culminating in the student teaching component.
Grade Specialization
Students in Mathematics and/or Science programs specialize at the middle school level (grades 6-9) or at the high school level (grades 9-12). These programs lead to certification in these areas.
