The College of Education (http://ced.ncsu.edu) at North Carolina State University, a comprehensive land-grant institution, invites applications for a tenure-track position, assistant or associate professor rank, in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, College of Education, North Carolina State University. The position is a nine-month appointment with the possibility of supplementary summer employment. Responsibilities

  1. Engage in scholarly research, publication, externally funded projects, and other appropriate professional activities addressing social studies education, especially involving secondary-level learners. North Carolina State University is a Research Intensive University. Candidates for this position would be expected to publish in national peer-reviewed publications.

  2. Teach undergraduate secondary social studies methods and coordinate/participate in supervision of undergraduate and graduate students in secondary social studies educational field settings.

  3. Teach graduate courses in social studies teacher education with a focus in secondary grades, and other graduate level courses relevant to curriculum and instruction (e.g. Foundations of Curriculum, Diversity, Global Education, Social Studies Content).

  4. Coordinate the graduate program in secondary social studies

  5. Advise undergraduate and graduate students in secondary social studies.

  6. Collaborate on interdisciplinary activities related to undergraduate social studies teacher education, which is jointly administered in the College of Education and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (http://chass.ncsu.edu) and serve as a liaison representing the College of Education in activities with the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. 

  7. Participate in undergraduate and graduate program development when appropriate.

  8. Collaborate on interdisciplinary initiatives addressing secondary social studies, including research opportunities at the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation (http://www.ncsu.edu/friday/).

  9. Provide appropriate service to diverse communities in North Carolina and North Carolina State University as well as in the social studies profession.

Required qualifications

  1. Doctorate appropriate to teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in social studies teacher education, especially secondary methods and materials courses.

  2. Scholarly potential for research, obtaining and implementing externally funded projects, and publication.

  3. Record of research and publications suitable for appointment at the rank of assistant or associate professor .

  4. Experience as a successful teacher of secondary social studies and eligibility for North Carolina teacher licensure in secondary social studies.

  5. Experience with integration of instructional technology in teaching and learning social studies

  6. Commitment to teaching in diverse environments.

Preferred qualifications

  1. Scholarly interests, achievements, and potential in instructional technology, diversity, assessment, and other topics related to research and teaching in secondary-level social studies.

  2. Academic background in social studies content areas including but not limited to history and/or geography.
