Backflipping Access Backflip Web sites

Tutorial

Backflip.com is a Web site where you can bookmark Web pages from any computer that provides access to the Internet. You must be a registered member to use this FREE service.  The following tutorial will help you go through the registration process so you will be able to save your Web pages and organize them on Backflip.  Then you will have easy access to your Web pages anytime, anywhere. A printer-friendly copy of this tutorial is available as a Word document.


Registration at Backflip

Step 1
To register, go to the Backflip Web site at www.backflip.com and click on New user? Click here(Look directly under the Member Login)

Step 2
On this Web page you will need to complete the form. Make sure that you choose a User Name and Password that will be easy for you to remember. (It is case sensitive, so remember exactly what you choose.)

    NOTE: Backflip does provide the option for requesting your User Name and/or Password if you forget it on the main Backflip Web page. 

Step 3

At the bottom of the form you will need to decide if you want emails to automatically be sent to you from Backflip. If you do not want to receive emails, click in the checked boxes to unselect them as seen below.  When you are finished, click on the NEXT button found at the bottom of the page.

Step 4
This Web page shows that you have been registered. Note the Welcome to Backflip, and your name. Click Next at the bottom of this page.

Step 5
On this Web page Backflip gives you the option to bookmark all the Web pages that you already have bookmarked on the Web browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer) you are currently using. If you are on your personal computer, you may want to add bookmarks that you have already saved in your browser to Backflip. This will take a few minutes.  

NOTE: Click Add Now if you want to bookmark your Web pages, or click No Thanks if you do not.  Backflip does provide the option to add your own Web pages later with the Add Favorites feature.

Step 6
Backflip will automatically create folders for you. On this Web page you will see a list of these folders. If you do not want these folders to be created, click in the checked box to unselect them. You will have the option to customize folders after you have completed this process. When you are finished, click NEXT.

Step 7
On this Web page you will have the option to take Start a Tour or begin Backflipping.

Step 8
Once you have taken the tour or clicked the button to begin Backflipping, you will be a member. You should notice that your name is located at the top of the Web page.

Let’s Begin to Backflip

Step 1
If you have just completed the registration process to Backflip, you should notice that your name is located at the top of the Web page.

NOTE:  If you are not logged into Backflip you will need to go to the Backflip Web site at www.backflip.com.  Login with your User Name and Password and click GO.

Step 2
Scroll down the Web page and click on My Folders.

Step 3
After you have clicked on My Folders you will come to this next Web page. Up at the top, click on Get Tools.

Step 4
On this Web page, click on Backflip It! Button. This is a link that will take you to a Web page that will give specific instructions on how to begin Backflipping Web pages. There will be different directions for a Macintosh User and a PC User.

Adding the Backflip It! Button 

PC User Macintosh User Quick Directions

PC Users  

 NOTE: This can be done on either Netscape or Internet Explorer. 

    1. Use the mouse to hold the cursor over the Backflip It! button
    2. Press the left mouse button and hold it down. Don't release it yet.
    3. Begin to drag the Backflip It! button to the browser toolbar.
    4. NOTE: You'll see a "circle-and-slash" Ø icon as you drag it. It will change when you are on the browser toolbar.  Look closely at the 2 examples below.

    5. Now it's time to release the mouse.
    6. You should see the "Backflip It! button appear on the toolbar. It will be below the location toolbar where you type Web addresses (URLs).
    7. Now it's time to release the mouse button.

NOTE:  Once you are ready to release the Backflip It! button on Internet Explorer, a pop-up window will appear. Just click Yes.

Macintosh Users

    NOTE: The directions for the Macintosh are a little different. Follow the step-by-step directions to add the Backflip It! button to the Macintosh using Netscape ONLY!.

  • First drag the Backflip It! button to your browser Links toolbar.
  1. Near the top of your browser, there's a Personal Toolbar. Using your mouse, don't click, but drag the Backflip It! link up to the toolbar. If you don't see the Personal Toolbar, go to Step 2. If you see toolbar skip to Step 7.
  2. On the browser menu, select View.
  3. Hold the cursor over the Show choice.
  4. See if the side menu has a check mark next to Personal Toolbar.
  5. If the checkmark is not there, scroll down to select Personal Toolbar.
  6. The Personal Toolbar should appear now near the top of the browser. It will be below the Location Toolbar where you type Web addresses (URLs).
  7. If the Personal Toolbar is there but it looks "full" of buttons, that's OK. When your cursor turns into a "+" with a chain link, you can drop it 'on top' of any other button. It will just go between two existing buttons.
  • The Backflip It! button is on the toolbar, but there is an additional step. Drag the Backflip It! link from your toolbar and drop it onto your desktop. (It becomes an alias.)
  • Whenever you see a page you wish to add to Backflip, simply double-click the Backflip It! alias on your desktop.

Quick Directions for Adding Backflip It! Button

NOTE: You will need to add the Backflip It! button to the toolbar each time you go to a different computer. Follow these quick steps:

  1. Go to www.backflip.com
  2. Login with your User Name and Password.
  3. Scroll down and click on My Folder.
  4. On the next page, click on the tab at the top labeled Get Tools.
  5. Scroll down and click on the link for Backflip It! button.
  6. Follow the directions to drag the button on the toolbar of the Web browser on the PC and on the desktop for the Macintosh.
  7. Need more details? Click on Macintosh or PC.

Backflipping!

  • If you are on the Internet and you want to Backflip a Web page, click on the Backflip It! button that is located on your browser toolbar. 

  • The following pop-up box will appear if you are not logged in to Backflip.  Fill in your User Name and Password, then click Sign In.

  • If you are logged in to Backflip and you have a Web page that you want to bookmark, click the Backflip It! button on the toolbar on the PC or on the desktop on the Macintosh. The following pop-up box will appear:

OPTIONS

  You will have the following options:

  • Edit the URL or Title

  • Add a Description 

  • Add Everything Else Folder 

  • Create New Folder

    NOTE:  If you do not create a New Folder the Web page will automatically be saved in the Everything Else Folder. The Everything Else Folder is the default Folder and will appear every time as your first choice

  • To choose a folder from the list of all folders, click on the down arrow.  A list of all the folders you have created will appear. Choose a folder from the list, then click Backflip It! to add the Web page to the folder.

  • To put the bookmarked Web page in a new folder click on New Folder.  

  • A new pop-up box will appear.  Under Create a Folder, type in the name of the new folder beside Name.  Click Create Now.
 

 

NOTE:  I chose to name the folder Educational Web sites.  I will be able to add other Web sites to this folder at any time.  

Click Create Now.

 

NOTE:  After you have chosen a name for the folder you will have several choices such as including a description for the folder and whether you want this folder to be a Subfolder in another folder.  For information on adding the Web page to a Subfolder or to let others see this folder by making it Public, go to the Help section at the Backflip Web site.

  • The following pop-window will appear again, but this time the folder will have a different name such as Educational Web sites instead of Everything Else.  
Click the Backflip It! and the Web site is bookmarked in that folder.

 

Accessing Bookmarked Web sites on Backflip

  • Now you are ready to access the Web sites that you have bookmarked using the Backflip It! button.
  • Remember that you must login with User Name and Password at the Backflip Web site www.backflip.com  You should see one of the following screens:
  • Click My Folders and a list of all the folders that you have created will appear. Each folder will show how many Web sites are saved in the folder.
  • NOTE: I saved 5 different folders: 

  • basics of computers (1) - I saved only 1 Web site in this folder.
  • 2001 Ncaect Best Teacher (11) - I saved 11 Web sites this folder.
  • 2002 Top Web sites (2)  - I saved 2 Web sites this folder.
  • Advanced HTML Tips (1) - I saved 1 Web site this folder.
  • To Choose a folder you must click on the folder title and a list of Web sites saved in the folder will appear.  

NOTE:  The folder title 2002 Top Web sites will appear at the top.  The 2 Web sites listed in this folder are: 

  • PC Magazine: Top 100 Web Sites 
  • The Top 100 Classics.

  • If you click any one of the two Web sites that are in this folder it would link you directly to the Web site.
  • You have the option to edit the folder as well as the Web sites in the folder.  Go to the Help section at Backflip for more details on these options.
